I have a 2 year old emachine computer with an Atapi DVD W DVD/CD ROM drive ..... earlier today I was burning a CD w/Sonic Record Now when the program froze . I cancelled the burn and walked away from the computer . When I came back about an hour later I could still hear the CD spinning in the drive but the drive would not open . I shut the computer down and restarted and ejected the CD . The CD was extremely hot and actually smelled a bit like melting plastic . Now the DVD/CD ROM drive will not recognize any CD that I put into the drive . I checked the device manager and tried disabling and enabling the drive and I also have shut down several times . Still won't recognize any CD I put in . Any ideas what the problem could be ?

I know what you mean. I need to save up for another computer myself, but my TV is about to go out on me so think I'll use that stimulus payment that is coming out in May for a TV

Your drive is toast. You're gonna need to get a new one.

The GOOD news is that DVD/CD drives are cheap at the moment- you can get a decent one for between 20-and-60 bucks, depending on the brand. If you were to go get a Blu-Ray drive, expect to pay around $300, with BD media costing a fair amount of dough.

Hey that is good news ... I was worried about the cost . I don't need anything fancy . I just want to be able to burn an occasional CD and watch a DVD ever now and then .

I just picked up a Pioneer DVD drive (Serial-ATA) from my local Fry's Electronics for about sixty bucks, which turns into THIRTY bucks after the mail-in rebate.

So NOT ONLY will it replace my older Sony drive (the door is about to go poop on it as well), but it's also faster too.

Of course, you're gonna have to install the drive. Or have someone else install it for you. And there's no telling what the cost of having that done will be.

Even the "off brand" CD/DVD drivers are good, they run about $30 to $40 at Best Buy / Circuit City. You can even order online and they will deliver.

Yeah. You could go for a "brand-X" drive as well. But with prices for the name-brand stuff being so low as it is, why even bother?

I went Pioneer because I've had pretty good luck with their stuff, which is something I couldn't say about Sony in the least.

But you COULD spend even less on a no-name brand. You might have some compatibility issues, and your warranty might not be as good, but it's another worthwhile avenue to take.

I have had repeated problems with CD's and DVD's and all that stuff until I am at the point that I can't depend on them to backup my files anymore.

So I use thumbdrives, and a slave drive or some other form of drive to do backups, or back up your stuff on line somewhere.

Also, if you are like me you have piles of disks and even old floppies and you have no idea what is on them. Half of them can't even be read by the drive you are using for what ever reason.

There has to be a better way. Somebody please invent a better way.

NO. I have a few games but nothing that elaborate.

The reason I was asking is because there is a CD/DVD protection software that is used on many games, which will kill your CD/DVD drive.
