Your significant other's entire family speaks a different language, say French. They seem nice and will accept you more easily if you speak it. Do you give it a go?

Yes.

My former father-in-law is German, but he speaks fluent English. Almost the entire family spoke German, with different levels of fluency. I wanted to learn German, but didn't make much of an effort. I learned a few things along the way, but I couldn't carry on a conversation. It would have made family gatherings more enjoyable for me (and them) because I wouldn't have needed all of that pesky translating.

Funny thing... My ex was born and raised in Germany. Most of my in-laws spoke very little or no English at all. Guess what? We got along BETTER because of that!!!!!

I've started by eating french toast for breakfast, french fries at lunch, french onion soup for dinner and for dessert, french vanilla ice cream....laugh

Well, I already speak French anyway, but anyway...

Sure. I liked learning French and would probably like learning another language if I had a real opportunity to do so.
