Your significant other's entire family speaks a different language, say French. They seem nice and will accept you more easily if you speak it. Do you give it a go?

Yes.
My former father-in-law is German, but he speaks fluent English. Almost the entire family spoke German, with different levels of fluency. I wanted to learn German, but didn't make much of an effort. I learned a few things along the way, but I couldn't carry on a conversation. It would have made family gatherings more enjoyable for me (and them) because I wouldn't have needed all of that pesky translating. |

Funny thing... My ex was born and raised in Germany. Most of my in-laws spoke very little or no English at all. Guess what? We got along BETTER because of that!!!!!
