Your significant other's entire family speaks a different language, say French. They seem nice and will accept you more easily if you speak it. Do you give it a go?


It's like the saying goes, "When in Rome (or in France, in this case), do as the Romans do." The only exception would be if said other family were living in my area or country, where the generally-accepted language here is English- if that's the case, then they're just gonna have to speak what is geographically-appropriate.

If I were in France though, I'd be trying my darnedest to speak (and mangling) French.

well, my in-laws did not speak any german so i was forced to learn english (i wanted to find out what they were saying about me....bigsmile )

and i am glad i did. now i am able to communicate in english with all of you nice people here. flowerforyou flowerforyou bigsmile

Why not? It never hurts to know another language. I speak Russian reasonably well, and, though I rarely get to use it, it makes for a hell of a conversation starter. Maybe that's why all those Russian girls write to me.

Well....as this EXACT scenario has happened to me I am obliged to say YUP....bigsmile

I've started by eating french toast for breakfast, french fries at lunch, french onion soup for dinner and for dessert, french vanilla ice cream....laugh


If I was french would you...................never mind.

Sure I would learn another language to communicate with them.
Might even teach them some of my language while I'm at it!


I allready know english and sign language.
I only know a few words in French- :wink:

I dated a man from Russia once, who's mother spoke no English at all...though we only dated 6 months, I gave it my best shot. It was a difficult language for me, but was a great experience despite the outcome. Wish I'd continued it.
