I use stew meat, sometimes just hamburger meat... it really is simple... if you have a crock pot even better...

In the crock pot I pour in the diced tomatoes & stewed tomatoes, then the carrots, cause they need to be on the bottom to get more heat, so they will get tender by the time the rest of it is done...

Then I put in celery (sometimes)... but certainly potatoes... & I like to add a can of corn... you can also add peas...

Then the meat... you can brown the stew meat a little before putting it in, or just put it in raw... (it is a good idea to let the stew meat sit in a bowl for a little while - maybe overnight - after you've sprinkled it with meat tenderizer & stirred it around to get the meat covered with it...)

If you put in hamburger meat, brown it first.... thouroughly...

Serve with cornbread muffins....

Add a can of whole kernel corn to the cornbread mix... adds texture.... for an interesting change....

I use a different crock pot recipe. I might give libra's recipe a try though.

One lb. of stew meat,
1/2 bag of baby carrots - cut them in half
A few stalks of celery
Potatoes
1 can of mushroom soup (do NOT add water)
A package of dried onion soup mix.

Cook on low for about 8 hrs.

Then add as many frozen green beans as you can fit in there.

Cook on low for a couple of more hours.

And, of course, corn bread.

Yum.

soups and stews are one of the easiest things to make. just brown off your meat in a large stock pot, until a nice color is achieved. add the veggies and saute lightly so that they sweat a little and use that to help pull the dredge from the pot. then deglaze the pan completely with whatever you have on hand that would be a good flavor to you. I use red wine, the 2 buck chuck stuff. add some stock or in a pinch the instant french onion soup mix and let it cook out until the flavors are too your liking. god love soups. they are the easiest things and make the best meals!

Michala~ yes you are so right on about the wine. Beer works too, and I find when it cooks there is little to no taste left. Of course all the alcohol cooks away, but it serves as a tremendous tenderizer for the meat.

I like peas and corn thrown in too... it is a great way to get rid of all the little bags left over in the freezer. flowerforyou

out of all I have tryed this has been the best yet. I made a few changes for my own taste, like adding bay leaves and I also cook it long and slow atleast 4-6 hrs before adding the vegies
