gota play the devil's advocate...

this is America, its a melting pot, if I could speak another language like Italian or French I would be doing it as often as I can...

and when americans are in another county they probably say the same thing about us..this is Italy, speak Italian damnit....

i agree. but as i pretty much said a couple posts up, it's different for a citizen than a visitor. it's just wrong to expect a culture/country to adapt to you rather than to adapt to that culture/country.

the original point is different than most of the one's that we've made. chatting with a friend is not the same as going to the register and getting mad because they won't speak your foreign language.

she was pissed because the people in front of her in line were having a private conversation in their own language, which, as far as I know, is perfectly legal.

They didn't ask anyone to do anything for them, other than to mind their own business. She was offended.

I'm just urious why someone is so interested in what other people are saying, and why so paranoid about if they are talking about them...like I said...just listen for your name...

i'm sure they're smarter than that, they'd use some other word in place of your name

exactly, if they are talking about me I don't know it, so it doesn't effect me.... if they aren't talking about me, what do I care what they are talking about.... It's like I tell my nail ladies...."I'm listening for my name ladies" do I care if they talk about me...nope, they do a good job and are nice to me.... who cares what they think about me????

Theres is a radio station or a tv station in every city that is all spanish.....NOW.....
My only deal with this is,,,,THAT HELPS US ALL TO SEPERATE here in the us, as If WE provide CHANGE to MAKE THEM feel more relaxed here, it STILL gives THEN NO INCENTIVE to EVER learn our english. And so THEIR CHILDREN ,,,WILL, and HAVE,,,been BORN here, and will not USE english or even need to try to??

But as to this MAIN question, in a public place, who cares??

I just mean us ALL living and growing and to be as ONE together,
WE should all be able to communicate in talking...

when i lived in the states, my ex and i only spoke german together because we felt more comfortable communicating in that language.

however, we were both able to switch to english in a second if other people joined the conversation. anything other would have been rude.

we would have never spoken about strangers in a public place because there was always the risk that they could have understood german. bigsmile

Worrying about if someone is talking about you in another language they are useing in a private conversation sounds a little paranoid to me. Or jealous that they are with either friends or family. If you are getting all worked up because they are speaking another language in your presence you can bet they are talking about you. Wondering why you seem hyper vigilant and angry for no apparent reason. Afraid of strangers that were you to greet them might just return your greeting and speak to you in "American" as an opportunity to "practice" a language that is filled with slang and double meanings.

For Example; "How are you?" Do you really want to know about Aunt Fannies hemorroids or are you greeting her with respect? Wanting only a perfunctory fine? Even if she is on fire?

What is funny to me is if we took all the "foreign" based words out of our "American" language we probably couldn't have a conversation at all because we have so integrated other languages. You sure wouldn't be able to give Street directions because many of them are in Native tongues.

As someone who started out speaking a Native Language and found out quickly I would be labled insane or retarded I learned to speak English with a southern conotation which would make me say to anyone who sqalls about someone speaking to a loved one in their native language or so animated to mimic someone publicly as "just Darrrrlin." when IMHO it is childish and selfish. You aren't talking to them so why do they need to communicate to you in your language?

What is interesting is what language you think we will be speaking when the fastest growing minority in the USA becomes the largest? There are already many states where if you do not speak Spanish you are not speaking the primary language. Pick any major American city and it is fast becoming the first language. I will bet money at least one of your Great- Grandchildren will speak it as the home language. If you think this is not true why do you think so many other minorities are learning to speak Spanish? I guarantee you if you are a homeowner in and ageing/changeing community you better learn to speak Spanish because the majority of the people you will have as neighbors and caregivers will. It will be an "Americanized" version of Spanish but Spanish none the less.

Interesting point, Pacific.

I think what we must realize as well is that we must be culturally relevant about all the facets and compositions of our society.

And then we need to educate ourselves about it and live accordingly, applying that cultural sensitivity and education in our daily lives. Respecting the differences and individuailities of people, cultures, races, enthnicities, religions, sexual orientation, etc. etc. etc. is a necessary part of life.

It is our society. To be ignorant about it is a CHOICE.

ok, already, when immigrants came to this country they bent over backwards to learn english as they were very , very proud to become an American, the land of opportunity. The only way you can't afford to learn english as a second language is that you are here illegally. Whats good for one is good for all. Would you want an influx of terrorist to come to our country? Anyone here illegally should go home, because pretty soon we'll all need those jobs back. Lets not beat crazy kitty up, she's a nice person and means well. I do get uncomfortable with a bunch of folks speaking in a different tongue, epecially when you turn smile, wave. Than they start laughing. Its either I've got something in my teeth or maybe my ass is to big.

How do we know that these people don't speak English? They were speaking among themselves.

And there was NOTHING at all in this entire thread about illegal immigration., or terrorists. I doubt the family in line ahead of Krazy in the grocery store were a group of terrorists, but I guess you never know. Maybe they were plotting the overthrow of the US Government in Spanish, a language that hardly anyone understands. Right. That must be it. That's what got Krazy's knickers in a twist.

This is the last thing I am going to say on this thread. I lived in the Miami area for 8 yrs. Every where you went all you heard was spanish. There are stores down there, that if you don't speak spanish you don't get service. My point to all of this was that in respect to the country that you are living in, working in, speak the language. I actually knew someone who lived here 30 yrs and could not speak english because down in the Miami area you don't have to speak english. Please understand I do not have anything against someone speaking thier native tongue. Like I said before I speak German, but out of respect to this country I speak english when I am around other americans. Spend 1 year in Miami and then tell me you feel the same. I should not have to be able to speak spanish to get a job. Until you have experienced what I am speaking about you will never understand.

My grammatical Spanish is a little rusty, but I think I made my point.
