I totally agree, but I also realize that if I am going to call them sir, most times I am going to get the ma'am thing in return....usually NOT out of respect....LOL! I've had some guys go berserk on me for saying sir...even once. At that point, I know for certain I would not match well with them...and I move on. I am not Miss Manners, by any stretch of the imagination, but I do like to show respect when chatting with new people, and I don't like to have to use their name every time....I suppose the same COULD be said for those who choose to use those....'terms of endearment...."....

Exactly, Linda. It's not that I am averse to those terms being used on me, it's just that to me...they are familiar terms, and to be used after getting to know someone...not as icebreakers towards that end. I will admit that I use the term sir alot when addressing men online, but I find that neither familiar NOR derogatory! I have gotten some flack for its usage, but....LOL!
