My 93 stick Civic had 160k and still got 30ish mpg. And I found it for $1000. My 92 Accord got, @ 130k, 21 mpg city. A well-maintained older Honda is your best bet.

If you like Akira you should check out the Tenchi series (OVA released in 92) oldie, but goodie. Can't say much about the movies that came out with it, seems like anything series-turned-movie just sucks. haha
