Here is what I think. If you let me I am goign to talk about sex. It really doesnt mean anything more than that. It doesnt mean that I am a good guy or that I am a bad guy. Ok, I was dying to answer with "The same reason hubcaps appear to sping backwards" but since you genuaily appear to want my answer I will give it to you.

They dont always appear to spin backwards and you can make them spin forward or backwards by what you are willing to accept. Just the same as the hovering plane. If you want to see it hovering it will appear to be hovering, if you want to see that it is in reality moving all you need to do is tell your brain that it is in fact moving and look for the movement.

Go out to a busy sreet and try the same thing with hubcaps. it will work, you can make them switch direction at will, just by telling yourself what you want to see. Theri are many hypothetical explanations for this, None of them proven. The one I have heard the most is that your brain process what the eyes see in snapshots and then puts them together like a movie. You choose which direction you want the movie to run.

For the same reason a plane in the distance looks like it is hovering in place.
