Right. But sometimes you just need something to stop the pain till you can work it out. till your brain can catch. I won't condone the continuous use but even doctors will prescribe for a week or two so you can "handle it" and "adjust".

How many people have you lost in your life? My mom was just taken to the hospital for chest pains. (She has had 7 stints in her corotid artery.) If I had them I just might take them too... When my Dad died I would have done it... Same with my Grandmother... Sorrow and grief do things to people they wouldnt normally do. Give him all the support you can. He obviously needs it.
