Its circumstantial.

People believe that smoking will kill them, but why do they still smoke?

If you believe that living an unhealthy lifestyle will shorten your lifespan - then why do so many continue to do so?

From party animals to IV drug users - I've met many that had true faith nested within them, but negative external influences had made their ability to express their true beliefs prohibitive.
