A Friend By My Side

My days are as long as nights.
The sun, I can feel no more.
Not even a speck of light.
Oh, please! I can stand no more.

I cry loudly "Set me free!"
But, I hear myself not.
I only want to be me.
Only for this I sought.

I will surely whither and die,
and blow away with the wind.
If only I could know why
and how my soul to mend.

I can not run away.
My hands and feet are tied.
Oh, to see the beautiful day
and a friend by my side.

How Can You Just Pass Me By?


I wonder if you remember me.
I'm the one you refused to see.
I thought I would to you write.
It's the only way left, I have to fight.

If this letter you should read
in some small way, maybe I can succeed.
As you walked pass me on the street today
here are a few things I wanted to say.

Have you never heard what the Lord said?
For some reason it stays in my head.
There but for the grace of God walk I.
How then can you just pass me by?

Would it hurt to spare a dime?
Or maybe even just a little time?
Are you so afraid of being like me
that you simply refuse to look and see

the truth that's in my sad lonely eyes
while you are still living on luck and highs?
No, I'm sorry I won't go away.
It looks as though I'm here to stay.

You live in a house all pretty and fine.
You could at least smile, while standing in mine.
Yes, my clothes are dirty, smelly, and torn
and people like you, walk by and scorn.

Saying that there's nothing you can do.
Maybe it helps you to think that is true.
There are many people just like me
homeless people that you refuse to see.

Maybe you should thank God and pray
that you wasn't with me today.
It could have been you there, instead of me.
And who knows, one day it may just be.

How do you see what I try
so hard to hide?
How do you know, all
that I try not to show?

When the one that loves
me so, doesn't see
the things that mean
so much to me.

You see my weaknesses,
strenghts, my dreams,
desires and my fears.
Why doesn't he?

I love the way that
you reach me so
very deeply. Yet, I
wish you were him.

I can't love you
my mind won't
let me. I see also
what you try to hide.

You are a very rare
jewel in this world
of stones. A person one
meets once in a lifetime.

I couldn't share
you with the world.
I am selfish and
easily hurt.

So I'll stay with
him, and teach him
to see, the fires
you have awakened in me.
