i also heard from a friend who lives in hong kong that people their play
pick up basketball all the time.

i'm not that great at basketball, but I've got to be like Shaq compared
to the average asian person. Maybe I can hustle some people for hong
kong money in 3 on 3 streetball. Now I just need some tatoos and a sweet
nickname...

I think I have to agree with Alpine... I kind of want to get my ass
kicked while I'm in Hong Kong. You know how cool it would be to tell
that story to my grandchildren (of course I would change so I win the
fight...)

I recently found out that I got a job for the summer in Hong Kong. Does
anyone here know any cool crap to do while I'm there? I am debating
about whether to find someone who is awesome at either ping pong or
karate so they can teach me how to be awesome (Asian style). Which one
should I go for?

i think it's interesting that so many studies have been done of this
whole 'first impression' thing and so we are all now well aware of the
fact that first impressions typically seal the deal. But we're each
totally free to choose whether that's true for us on an individual
basis. So if we wanted to, we could make all the studies completely
wrong and turn out the exact opposite way.

That's what I usually do because I hate studies like that so much. They
aren't based on any kind of science. It's almost like their producers
just want to repeat a mantra over and oaver until the public buys into
it. On one level, it's kind of manipulative to convince people that
first impressions are so important. It plays into the whole sterotypical
structure of attractiveness and social expectations.

For me there is no first impression or recent impression, etc. I just
try to get an impression of a person, one that is always capable of
changing. And just because someone is annoying or leaves a bad first
impression does not mean I won't keep talking to them.

Even if you don't like the high, the short term memory receptors are
still being built. For instance, I don't like the taste or effect of
alcohol so I don't drink it. But if I did drink it, I would build
chemo-receptors that respond with a "pleasure" signal every time
thereafter that I did drink it.

So, even if you psychologically hate the effect of marijuana, you are
physically building receptors that do like it when you smoke it.

As for the joint pain, I can't say whether it's the marijuana or not
because this stuff can work differently for everyone. I highly doubt
that marijuana has any intrinsic properties that help make the pain go
away; it's probably psychological. Besides, even things like advil,
tylenol, bayer, and alieve do not heal you.

In fact, when you take tylenol it actually slows down the healing
process. When joints hurt or when your head aches, it is the bodies
natural way of letting you know that something is wrong and needs to be
fixed (or is in the process of being fixed). Taking tylenol (which is
just like smoking marijuana) only masks the pain for a short time and
does not help you actually get better. When you have a fever, for
example, Tylenol will make your body take longer to get rid of it.
Tylenol and things like it are unnatural and unnecessary.

Anyway, this is all completely beside the point because we discussed
earlier and mostly agreed that even if marijuana was terrible for you,
you should still be legally allowed to smoke it. In principle it's no
different than rat poison, alcohol, or anything else. The government
lets people poison their minds all day with junk on TV. Why can't a
person smoke marijuana if that's what he wants to do to his own body.

i have to disagree on that one.

i don't believe in the whole "there one person for me" thing. i think
relationships work or fail based on too many extrinsic factors for that
to be true.

Here are some quotes I have found helpful in my life. If it's not
otherwise credited, then I (believe that I) was the first to think of
it:

“Forget about income. Worry about outcome.”

“It’s impossible to escape from God. You can’t escape from someone who
isn’t holding you against your will.”

“Science is like trying to put together a puzzle in the dark without
knowing how many pieces there were to begin with.”

“By adherence to a favorite theory, many errors have at times been
introduced into general science which have required much labor for their
removal. To guard against these requires a large proportion of mental
humility, submission, and independence.”
-Michael Faraday

“Science cannot exist in the presence of censorship.”

“In the end, each of us will either say ‘Thank you God’ or ‘Thank you
Odds.’ One of those things is in our favor… "

“But if you can’t understand how God could have created everything in
six days, then grant the Holy Spirit the honor of being more learned
than you are.” –Martin Luther

“There’s not much difference between logic and magic; still less between
poof and proof”

"Man's most trusted instinct is to distrust his instincts."

"The most skilled checkers player is surpassed even by a beginner of
chess."

"The greatest crime is to be apathetic."

This is my point. He was a Harvard educated mathematician and I happen
to agree with most of what he wrote. Yet, because of his actions we have
labeled him crazy and cast away his ideas as meritless. Perhaps they
aren't meritless and he wasn't crazy.

Crazy is a relative term anyhow. I would be crazy if I were injected in
a society where raping children was the societal norm. Extremism is
merely the belief in things that don't agree with the agreed upon ethics
of society at large.

In my opinion, everyone is an extremist. But to avoid negative
consequences, each of us hides those points that make us unacceptable to
society (or we develop complexes to mask or get rid of these sorts of
traits (or we have empty heads and only care about television so that we
can't even develop individuality in the first place))).

Jess,

I believe your questions depends on numerous prior questions about the
belief in God, special creation, and all the minute details therein.

Assumming that you believe in God and that he did create things, then
you could argue that absolutely all things are byproducts of that
creation. Until the last decade, no life force that we are aware of had
the ability to create plant species on its own. Now we can with genetic
engineering. Since marijuana existed before genetic engineering, this
must mean that nothing but God could have created it, supposing that he
created anything at all.

I feel that this question hits at another point however. I think people
are trying to justify the use of marijuana because it was created by
God. The Bible, for example, would not permit this. Even in the first
few chapters of the Bible, when God creates the fruit that Adam and Eve
are not supposed to eat, we have an example of something which God
directly created but which man is not supposed to consume.

If you feel that the stories of Genesis are myths, then consider the
example of brown recluse spiders. Not even modern genetic engineering
can approach the creation of a spider, so these (if created) had to have
been products of God. If you eat one, you will die very quickly from the
poison in its abdomen.

In either case we have examples of God-created things that are not to be
consumed by humans. Thus, in the case of marijuana you must provide a
rationale for why it ought to be used if you are in favor of using it.
If not, you ought to provide a rational for why it should not be used.
In either case, you can't merely fall back on the argument "God made it,
therefore I can use it if I want to."
