You could buy or borrow an external usb hard drive and put your laptop hard drive in there and see if you can see yr files. If the files aren't there you can still get software to retrive the data. I believe there is free software to scan and retrieve. It's not that hard. Or as suggested- drop the hard drive in another computer and try to access.
