Most girls (if not all) prefer assertive guys. Noone wants a "weak" man. You should be able to take control, that's how it's meant to be right, men leading and women following (to some extent). Personally, I would be prefer that a guy picked up the bill, especially on the first date.. Make me feel loved, and appreciated..that you can take care if things were to go further.
