Online Dating. So risky. Why do we take the risk?

My roommate met a girl online a month ago, and it didn't go so well. At first, it went great. He was madly in love with her, and she gave the notion of the same. However, the lies soon started to come out. He found something from craigslist about her going to meet a 40 year old guy in the summer, to get paid for sex. Also, he found an application to Adult Career Finder, to be a porn star. She and her friend had tricked him into thinking that she went missing. Later, he finds out that she went to North Carolina, where her ex-boyfriend resides. What a mess.

So. What makes you take the risk?

the knowledge that if im a good person, then there are others like me, and where i live.. its not likely that i will meet them.. (combined with the 4 kids and the job )
so online seems so much vaster.. and i know that there are good people here..
i dont much like other sites.. but i trust people here.. have friends here .. love people here .....
its safe... (ish)

and (if) the one that i have found ends up being the one.. then the search is complete.. and if not.. i will ask my friends to help me pick up the pieces and move on with my life.. and i know that they will..

basicly.. its not so much the online dating.. its the online friends...

(sorry a bit rambelley..lol..)flowerforyou

So. What makes you take the risk?

a.) There's no way to meet anyone in real life where I live. I just can't get enthused about cows and pigs and goats, at least not in a dating scenario.

b.) It's free (although pay sites seem to have more people willing to e-mail me even though they haven't read my profile).

c.) There's a minuscule statistical possibility that someday there will be a girl on here who meets my criteria. I KNOW it's almost impossible -- there are, what, 6 people on this entire site who don't drink? But still. And there's nobody datable here right now. But 2037 is another year entirely.

I took a chance at this on line dating stuff. Yes at first it really sucked and I found alot of sicko's out there. You do need to be careful male or female.

I was just about to give up, but I found my other half. The one that completes me, on jsh.

Now we are together and planning a wedding.

Faith, hope and a little compassion, you never know what can happen.

I don't take the risk. I'm really only here for the forums and the friends I've made. I'm really cautious about who I would meet on this site. I've met people off the internet before, and I've been through the lies and bull**** from it. I'd like to find someone worthy of meeting, but she'd have to be really special to me..

Why not take the risk?

You could just as easily meet someone in a bar/club, start dating them and find out lies about them too. Just because you're first interaction is online and not in person doesn't really mean anything.

Eh.. not really online you can fabricate EVERYTHING including what you look like. At least in person you get more of a snapshot even though it is possible to lie..

Yes but im saying use online as a way to "meet" someone, maybe talk a little, not have a serious relationship. If you have things in common then set up a real meeting.

I don't however understand people who say they are in love and have a relationship with someone they have never met in person.

I guess they hope it will happen. I had a girl tell me she loved me after 3 weeks of phone convos (met her off here) and I never met her in person because she messed up. Sigh, she had serious problems though..

Some people, like my roommate, are in love with the notion of love, not the person themselves. They are so desperate for companionship, that they smother themselves in the first one they get.

No pain... no gain. I suppose you have to take a risk with everything. The issue is not investing more than you can afford to lose.

there is good and bad online or in the real world is all I can say

I met a guy online that turned out to be a registered sex offender...sad thing is, he shot pool where I normally shot pool at and I could have met him there too

The thing is people can lie to you off-line just like they can on-line...it just takes a little bit longer to find out when you are on-line. I am just here for friends so I don't really trust that many people on here.
I have had a few dates BUT I think one of the guys was a liar and when I called him out..he deactivated his account. That right there shows me that he lied. I don't like a liar, if you have to lie about something..why even be here?huh
