than the average person. When you first meet someone, how many times do you think you need to point this out? Or do you really think it's necessary to insert the bigger words that mean the same thing into every sentence?

I almost never try to use more advanced vocabulary into my conversations. Not only is it pompous, but it really isn't an indication of more-advanced intelligence- for all you know, the person might have just studied a Thesaurus or something.

I always assume (no matter what) that someone I'm speaking to is more intelligent than I am, so I try to speak coherantly.

Though I never try to use "big" words in order to make myself appear more intelligent. I it when people do that >< Especially those who use words and don't even know how to use them correctly/ know what they mean.

Exactly! It always leaves me picturing the person sitting at home over their dictionary or what not memorizing every word they can, only if it's over 5 syllables!, and then taking notes on what words they could possibly use them in place of!

Exactly.

I just use what seems like the right word to me when I talk and people have accused me of using big words. I mean, sometimes they are only two syllables - hardly "big". I can't help how many words I know and I have no way of knowing how many words the person I am speaking to knows. So how do you know how much you have to dumb it down? Why can't I just use the words that make the most sense to me?

And personally, I think it is rude to have to point out how smart you are. People figure it out quickly enough.

If I wanted to confuse someone with my intelligence, I'd bring up weird facts that the normal bystander wouldn't know about. That usually shuts them up rather quickly.

Are you feeling ignorant because you dont know the same words as the person you are dating??? Maybe he has more education than you? Are you to say that this person was trying to make you feel small because you didnt have the same education?huh

If two people can carry on a conversation, and one is babbling non-stop, and the other is using sock puppets, more power to them.

Me, I prefer to communicate with someone who has a LITTLE bit of a sharp mind and wit, but more importantly, communicates BACK to me.

One-sided conversations never go anywhere.

Jace, I would really like to witness that conversation.

does it occur to you that some people simply know a lot of words from reading voraciously, or going to college? Not everyone is a show-off. It seems a weird thing to pick on people for - are we supposed to pretend we don't know any words that you don't know?

lol No. I have a pretty extensive vocabulary myself. I just don't use it to try to show off. I try to speak in the same language the people I'm talking to use. It was really just a general question. That's why I posted it in general discussion. Otherwise I would've posted it in the relationship advice forum.

I get that all the time, too. Excuse me for having a vocabulary. Is it my fault if the next person doesn't understand what sahelanthropus tchadensis is?
