you know, when they study the brains of those with ADHD, there're noticeable differences...that are helped by the medications of those that need them.

it's NOT just a behavioral issue, it's a chemical imbalance of the brain.

ty... I was trying to explain it...but I couldn't get it out there flowerforyou

which is why Ritalin and the similar meds work the opposite for those that don't have it.

for all the naysayers,I am a very strict parent and my son has ADHD.For the first six years of life I denied the problem. My child was suffering because he could not focus. Now he is on meds for the ADHD but he is not allowed to use
ADHD as an excuse to be an ass.His school work has improved though we have had some setbacks due to his other parent not visiting. He starts counseling next week to deal with those issues. Not all children are undisciplined monsters thank you .
also my son takes one pill in the morning ,on school days and is no zombie believe you me.If you don't believe in meds great but don't dump on those who use them.

I'm sure you read through, this isn't supposed to be a disrespect thing, nor some lame generalization. Not all situations are the same, and my opinion is never completely formed until all the facts are in. What I've reported are instances I've seen. My point was that not all children that are on it, need to be. Just something a little more interesting to talk about, is all!ohwell

Not only are the "diagnoses' getting out of hand...ADHD, teen depression, ED, etc., so are the drugs that accompany them. The medical profession, both health and mental is turning our society into a bunch of hypochondriacs.

I have yet to let any one test my blood for cholesterol count. Hell! There were no worries about that when I was growing up, why worry about it now! I know my body and I know how to take care of myself.

Back to the original topic of ADHD...never an issue with me and my brothers. Our parents were "on top of it" and we were instilled with the fear of God if we were to act up as a kid. We truly understood the meaning of 'sit still and pay attention' and perfectly understood the consequences if we did not comply.

The only way to "test" ADD/ADHD like you would take blood etc...is to pretty much open up the brain to find the chemic missing. You can't do that while alive so the only way to test is from evaluations. These can easily be wrong if the patient or parents lie.

people with ADD/ADHD arent behavior problems any more than anyone else. My son is a very respectable kid and very well disciplined but he can't focus

sitting still and paying attention isn't easy for them...even if they try as hard as they can.

It's a chemical imbalance as lulu explained...not a behavior problem

they do show up on pet scans and the like...but many people can't afford the expense for such testing.

Ok now its my turn to say how I feel!
I have 2 boys, one with ADD and one with ADHD, so I know all about this topic. I am one of the lovely people who decided to medicate my children. I had a choice and medication was my choice!
I took both my boys to 2 doctors, a psychiatrist plus my brother is a psychologist. EVERY single one of them stated that each one of my boys could be a "poster child" for this disease. If you have never been around a child that actually has this, then truly..you have no clue!
Both my boys stated that they felt like they had a million thoughts spinning in their brain when they were not on the meds.
Could you imagine feeling that way, I sure couldn't. They said it made them feel like they were going crazy. BUT after we found the correct medicine for them, you wouldn't believe the difference.
Both my boys are great students. My oldest son is now in college and is already certified in Microsoft. Both boys are very smart and lead a very calm life now.
As far as S.S./Disability goes, I have no clue about that. I feel like this, if your child is found disabled, then obviously theres a reason for them collecting the money..more power to you! My youngest son has 4 disorders and we do not get any type of benefits for him. I think if people complain about other people getting disability, you have way to much time on your hands!!

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a biological, brain based condition that is characterized by poor attention and distractibility and/or hyperactive and impulsive behaviors. It is one of the most common mental disorders that develop in children. Symptoms can continue into adolescence and adulthood. If left untreated, ADHD can lead to poor school/work performance, poor social relationships and a general feeling of low self esteem.

LULU: I know I wasn't given the option of a PET scan when my son was dignosed 10 yrs ago...so I didn't know that. But I do know that he has it. You can see it in his eyes etc
