I just got a fantastic job with a competitor. It's a huge step up for me. I know my boss will walk me out the door tomorrow when I hand in my resignation. I am excited and sad at the same time.
Any advice on writing the letter?

Just write the letter. Be professional and don't use "emotional" language when writing it.

 As previously stated, keep it short, but include a statement something to the effect that your "time with this company was invaluable and you appreciate the opportunity of working with such a great team...etc." That way you leave with the respect of your boss and he knows that you appreciate him. |

Well - would just state the facts, you are resigning, what date time it is effective and be done with it. |
