Short story rating (be honest) 1 - 10. 1 Being Terrible, 10 being um yeah, you need to write these too.

As the rain pounded on the roof, he sat at his desk in the dimly lit room. With pen in hand, he was trying to overcome an emotional obstacle that had haunted him for the last two years. He was a poet by trade, and usually words flew faster from his brain to his fingers.

This Poem, however, would be the hardest he would write. He walked over to a row of candles, posted near the window and lit one. His heart was still in agony over his loss. He had spent so much time away from home, deploying to places that he to this day could not divulge to those without a Top Secret clearance.

He had fought proudly for his country and had done what he was told, when he was told. Often in combat situations, he’d risk his own life to save others. What he was dealing with this second, he would gladly have given up his own life for her. He missed his Mom tremendously.

He held feelings of regret that he was not able to be with her in her final days. It was as if one day, he was 19, fighting against rebel forces in Africa and suddenly, he turned 40 and most of the memories were merely a blur.

He paced back and forth across the hard wood floor and yelled to the walls, “Damn it, I was Special Forces, I’m a published poet, and I will do this for you. I will write you a poem that will make you proud”

He took out his finest paper and began to write a poem for her with his finest ink pen. He had been hardened by his time in the military, but he was in enough pain to leave a circular spot of ink as the tear feel from his eye. He wrote his most elegant, respectful, and most thought out poem he had ever written in his life.

As he folded the poem and put it into the waterproof bag, he was proud of the accomplishment he had been able to achieve. He ran his fingers through his dark hair, and then drove down to the cemetery.

The rain was bitter cold as he placed the poem upon her grave stone. He suddenly felt a surge of heat fill his body with peace and felt as if air itself had reached out to touch his shoulder.

He smiled a large smile and said aloud, “You’re welcome Momma, I miss you and I love you eternally”. He climbed up the muddy hill and returned to his car with a feeling of serenity he had not felt in several years. As he drove away, he blew her a kiss.

Tears of joy and pride contained in a cold rain, did his heart melt, did he know? A little lost boy continues to grow.....

Hehe, now I will have to work REALLY hard to keep up with reqests. Nowhere NEAR being ready for requests for Short Stories, but I'll still take them on the poetry side. Thank you Ms. Wench and all of you whom offered your opinion!
