Usually it means they arent sure what they want. Or that things are getting too serious for them. But when someone puts it that way it usually means they dont want to let go completely but they arent sure how much they want either.

In my personal history, it means I want to break up with you, but I don't know how. Maybe if I ask for space, you will do the breaking up.

Happened to me in January. Knew in my gut it was going to happen, there was someone else, he made excuses, I called him on it, and then we were over.

As a good friend said to me, if someone says "I don't know what I want"...this means "I don't know what I want, but I know it is not YOU!" In hindsight I can see she is right.

Well when ever I have heard that said to others it always ends up the other person is not sure that they want to be with them anymore. 90% of the time they are not happy with that person and want time to look at the situation and normaly they end up splitting in the long run.

Myself I have never used that line if it is over it is over have the guts to own up to it if its not there its not there.
