The orginal version of Sherlock Holmes showed him as a morphene addict in between solving crimes, thus his "friendship" with Dr. Watson....elementary.... It showed up as the book called the "Seven Percent Solution"! Yes Sherlock was depicted as having a drug problem but that had nothing to do with his meeting or being friends with Dr. Watson. The very first Sherlock Holmes book, "A Study In Scarlet" describes their meeting and relationship.
