Does anyone know what the purpose/function of the "System Restore" feature on my computer is for?

I accidentally deleted a file containing some pictures and videos I didn't want to delete? Will it restore those?

did you completly delete them or just in the trash bucket on ur computer? there should be a way to get them back. but yes i think you can get them back if you haven't completely deleted them.

I deleted them from My Documents AND emptied the recycle bin?

NO! System Restore is generally included by the manufacturer and will restore the system to it's original state (i.e. erase everything but what came on the computer).

Your best bet is to buy an UnErase utility (Symantec makes a good one) and try that.

DO NOT TRY TO USE THE SYSTEM RESTORE

System Restore is essentially a means to get your computer back to a condition before something like a bad install or malware infestation. It won't restore pics that you've accidentally deleted.

To restore pics, you'll need to get a photo recovery proggie, like GetData's "Recover My Pics" or any of the other freeware ones available on the net.

Yes, if you restore to a day before you deleted the folder it should bring them back. It restores back to the way it was on the day you restore it to. Hens why there are different restore points.

Maybe this will help with any questions that you may have. I am just assuming that you are running XP. If not then I am sorry.

Hmmm kinda funny cause when ever I do a system restore the things I deleted are back into my recycling bin.

This is true...Success depends on your checkpoints. I have also had some files not restore.

The Windows System Restore only works if you have it set to create recent checkpoints. In addition, many manufacturers use a system restore function that will restore the computer to its original state. If you don't have a knowledge of the system, the only safe bet is to have a professional look at it, or use an undelete utility.

That said, sure, the system restore might do what you want, but unless you know what you're doing, it's not worth the chance.
