well this was meant just for a quick little trivia question. You will realize now what it is and realize what such a supposedly easy invention enabled all of us to be able to use a computer. Without it this forum out doubt would be here..It is what has enabled us to point and click to navigate what we want to do...Miles

Windows or Microsoft have done more to hold computing back than anyone else.
The biggest breakthrough in computing is the Transistor. It took computing from the big old huge punch card machines (Analog Computing), to something similar to what we have today (Digital Computing). Many people believe that the transition to Quantum Computing will be as a big a leap again. Ta, ~C |

The Transistor was a great breakthrough for all electronics. It actually was a big reason for the fall of Russia. Russia believing that Tube technology should be kept because of war. If a nuke was exploded on the ground or 200 miles above us from the EMP Electromatic Pulse it would produce would fry all transistors bringing our nation to a standstill and they could just walk in. Well we know that did not happen because the US was concerned about this also. They found shielding transistors with lead would stop this pulse. So while they were working with tubes our knowledge far succumbed them. Reagans Star wars project doomed thier Super Power status. Very little has been said since the gulf war the 1st one they referred to it. That is where the technolgy for the patriot Missile came from. If you realize the computing power it takes to hit a 450mph missille with another aiming at the war head and whet we had in the public domain. We are far far away from the militaries technology. A good search to find out about Nasa's quite new Shuttle program is Ares the name of it meaning.. God of War. To go up in 2 pieces next year it is so huge.. Blessings and Computers did not hit the mainstream public untill that little mouse was designed to point and click. Without it few would have computers today..Miles

Oh, one of my engineering professors was one of the guys that built the first super computer with transistors I believe.
