It is going to reenter our atmosphere and has some very toxic fuel aboard, not to mention the pieces that might land on our head. Also it has some top secret equipment that they prefer no one gets there hands on... So the goal is to destroy it before it comes crashing down...

I've heard that this satellite has some sensitive and classifed technology and they would rather it not end up in forieghn hands

I think it's a great opportunity to test our capability to use our missile defense system for shooting down incoming missiles.

DON'T BELIEVE what they are telling you.
This is a SHOW OF FORCE. Anybody old enough to remember Skylab? That sucker was really big and we didn't have to shoot it down! We are DEMONSTRATING our ability to shoot down objects with new missle technology. We are trying to impress the Russians and Chinese.
