Scenario: Jack goes quail hunting before school, pulls into school parking lot with shotgun in gun rack.
1957 - Vice Principal comes over, looks at Jack's shotgun, goes to his car and gets his shotgun to show Jack. 2007 - School goes into lock down, FBI called, Jack hauled off to jail and never sees his truck or gun again. Counselors called in for traumatized students and teachers. Scenario: Johnny and Mark get into a fistfight after school. 1957 - Crowd gathers. Mark wins. Johnny and Mark shake hands and end up buddies. 2007 - Police called, SWAT team arrives, arrests Johnny and Mark. Charge them with assault, both expelled even though Johnny started it. Scenario: Jeffrey won't be still in class, disrupts other students. 1957 - Jeffrey sent to office and given a good paddling by the Principal. Returns to class, sits still and does not disrupt class again. 2007 - Jeffrey given huge doses of Ritalin.. Becomes a zombie. Tested for ADD. School gets extra money from state because Jeffrey has a disability. Scenario: Billy breaks a window in his neighbor's car and his Dad gives him a whipping with his belt. 1957 - Billy is more careful next time, grows up normal, goes to college, and becomes a successful businessman. 2007 - Billy's dad is arrested for child abuse. Billy removed to foster care and joins a gang. State psychologist tells Billy's sister that she remembers being abused herself and their dad goes to prison. Billy's mom has affair with psychologist. Scenario: Mark gets a headache and takes some aspirin to school. 1957 - Mark shares aspirin with Principal out on the smoking dock. 2007 - Police called, Mark expelled from school for drug violations. Car searched for drugs and weapons. Scenario: &nbs p;Pedro fails high school English. 1957 - Pedro goes to summer school, passes English, goes to college. 2007 - Pedro's cause is taken up by state. Newspaper articles appear nationally explaining that teaching English as a requirement for graduation is racist. ACLU files class action lawsuit against state school system and Pedro's English teacher. English banned from core curriculum. Pedro given diploma anyway but ends up mowing lawns for a living because he cannot speak English. That is so true, plus we also had to sing the National Anthem, say the pledge of allegiance to the flag, and had to say the moring prayer before class got started. And this all was at a public school not a private school. Also if you werent at school that morning you had a truant officer knocking on your door, talking to your parents to see why you were not at school. Plus we also had to all wash our hands before we ate, and the teachers made sure we did You did something wrong, you got a paddling at school, and another whipping at home with a belt. It wasn't child abuse, it was love. |

Most of those were true even in the 80's. We weren't required to pray, but we did say the pledge of alliegence (spelling?).
A teacher hugging a student was not looked at as a sexual predator, just as a teacher that cared. I'm sad to see what has become of a once caring nation. |

Hey Genius Just so you know..
Ritalin is a stimulant. So if you give a kid that can't sit still a "huge doses of Ritalin" that would mean you are giving the kid a huge dose of stimulant. Now if you just gave that to a normal kid he would be bouncing off the wall. The kids that have the actual disorder called Attention Defect Disorder, when given this stimulant calm down. WOW that doesn't seem to fit in your whole perfect world does it. I'm glad you like the idea of kids with mental disorders getting physicaly beat. I personally like the idea that science helps that kid get better grades and not have to get hit. |

I think Ritalin is a drug making zombies out of the kids and then we just have more non thinking people (Zombies) I don't think there is anything wrong with the kids , but there is a whole lot wrong with the school systems(dumb the people down) I think these live wire kids are just high achievers being held back and bored by a bad school system. If they were occupied with worth while teaching and worth while subjects(learning a trade ,etc.)they would not be so bored and restless. They would be the highest achievers in the school. The problem is that these kids can think and are smarter than those trying to teach them. It is a sad thing going on with the Ritalin being forced on the kids(criminal).

SMO did you just read that above your head? What sense would it make to give a kid that is already "restless" a stimulant?
I can only assume you are ignoring these facts for reasons I cannot understand. Who would give a stimulant to a restless wired kid? Ritalin is a stimulant. It just happens to work for the exact problem that is in the brain. So this STIMULANT calms the hyper kid down. Because he has a very specific brain disorder. Why don't you start wailing about the increase is Insulin. It is on a major upswing with kids. It must be some kind of ciminal intent. |

OMG. You are sooooo on target. My mom is in her 70's and she said that when she was in school, a private Catholic School, the big scandal was that a group of girls were caught in the ladies' room smoking, not marjuiana, just regular cigarettes. The whole school was called into the auditorium and the principal gave a scathing warning that anyone else caught smoking in the school would be suspended for a week.
My mom also said she got into trouble for chewing gum during one of the classes. She had to stay after school and wash all the blackboards. Now a days .... drugs, guns, even rape, and who knows what else are the norm in some of the schools. It is my understanding that some schools have metal detectors. |

Mr Rabbit , I don't know what Ritalin is, but I don't think it should be forced on anyone's kids, I don't think that you should be able to decide for me whether my kids have Ritalin forced on them , since when? should any one play dictator on other people or other people's kids? my only problem with the whole ADHD thing is that alot of kids seem to be suffering from it, esp recently. When I was in school in the 80's we had one kid in the entire school with adhd, now most classes seem to have at least one or two. ADHD is tacted on to any child that can't sit still or continuously disrupts class.
I know what ritalin does my sister was diagnosed with ADHD but it wasnt because of the normal reasons, she wet through alot of testing before they said that was what she had. |

When I was in school we said the Pledge of Allegience daily and also had a time for morning prayer. Additionally, when we had assembly, we sang The National Anthem. We were taught to love America, that it was our country, right or wrong. We were taught to respect the flag; if we saw a flag laying on the ground, pick it up. Above all we were taught self-respect and shame. We would never do anything that brought shame on our family, our school, our friends, and ourselves. Today, the kids don't care if they are suspended from school and look at the U-Tube (?), is that what it is called? At any event, there are videos of girls beating each other up and all kinds of nonsense. |

It has been shown to increase aggressive responses to simple situations, ritalin is by no means a wonder drug and it should not be handed out as though it is one. |

Well the problem is that after enough of the drug is administered it does have to opposite effect...So if you give a kid Ritalin for long enough his body then NEEDS it to maintain a normal range...JUST LIKE COFFEE FOR ADULTS.... and the rise in insulin in kids is because parents don't TURN OFF THE TV AND MAKE THE KIDS GO OUTSIDE AND EXERCISE... There are 2 types of diabetes,,,type I and type II the rise in type II is what is alarming in children...in 1980 there were only about 2,000 cases of type II diabetes in children, now (the last statistic I have) in 2004 there are almost a million cases.... type II can be controled with diet and exercise, only the lazy ones take the insulin....type I has no known cause, type II it is a diet and weight issue. |
