ORANGE COUNTY ( CALIFORNIA ) NEWSPAPER
This is a very good letter to the editor. This woman made some good points. For some reason, people have difficulty structuring their arguments when arguing against supporting the currently proposed immigration revisions. This lady made the argument pretty simple. NOT printed in the Orange County Paper however................. Newspapers simply won't publish letters to the editor which they either deem politically incorrect (read below) or which do not agree with the philosophy they're pushing on the public. This woman wrote a great letter to the editor that should have been published; but, with your help it will get published via cyberspace! New Immigrants From: 'David LaBonte' My wife, Rosemary, wrote a wonderful letter to the editor of the OC Register which, of course, was not printed. So, I Decided to 'print' it myself by sending it out on the Internet. Pass it along if you feel so inclined. Dave LaBonte (signed) Written in response to a series of letters to the editor in The Orange County Register : Dear Editor: So many letter writers have based their arguments on how this land is made up of immigrants. Ernie Lujan, for one, suggests we should tear down the Statue of Liberty because the people now in question aren't being treated the same as those who passed through Ellis Island and other ports of entry. Maybe we should turn to our history books and point out to people like Mr. Lujan why today's American is not willing to accept this new kind of immigrant any longer. Back in 1900 when there was a rush from all areas of Europe to come to the United States , people had to get off a ship and stand in a long line in New York and be documented. Some would even get down on their hands and knees and kiss the ground. They made a pledge to uphold the laws and support their new country in good and bad times. They made learning English a primary rule in their new American households and some even changed their names to blend in with their new home. They had waved good-bye to their birth place to give their children a new life and did everything in their power to help their children assimilate into one culture. Nothing was handed to them. No free lunches, no welfare, No labor laws to protect them. All they had were the skills and craftsmanship they had brought with them to trade for a future of prosperity. Most of their children came of age when World War II broke out. My father fought alongside men whose parents had come straight over from Germany, Italy, France and Japan. None of these 1st generation Americans ever gave any thought about what country Their parents had come from. They were Americans fighting Hitler, Mussolini and the Emperor of Japan They were defending the United States of America as one People. When we liberated France, no one in those villages were looking for the French-American or the German- American or the Irish-American. The people of France saw only Americans. And we carried one flag that represented one country. Not one of those immigrant sons would have thought about picking up another country's flag and waving it to represent who they were. It would have been a disgrace to their parents who had sacrificed so much to be here. These immigrants truly knew what it meant to be an American. They stirred the melting pot into one red, white and blue bowl. And here we are in 2007 with a new kind of immigrant who wants the same rights and privileges. Only they want to achieve it by playing with a different set of rules, one that includes the entitlement card and a guarantee of being faithful to their mother country. I'm sorry, that's not what being an American is all about. I believe that the immigrants who landed on Ellis Island in the early 1900's deserve better than that for all the toil, hard work and sacrifice in raising future generations to create a land that has become a beacon for those legally searching for a better life. I think they would be appalled that they are being used as an example by those waving foreign country flags. And for that suggestion about taking down the Statue of Liberty? It happens to mean a lot to the citizens who are voting on the immigration bill. I wouldn't start talking about dismantling the United States just yet. (signed) Rosemary LaBonte |

Oh, man here we go with the dam misinformation propaganda. Illegals do not get benefits from the government. They are not eligible.
Stop believing the garbage spread by these racist propagandist. They are hatemongering and everyone that buys it is spreading the problem. Even legal immigrants do not get benefits from our government until they have been here for sometimes more than 10 years. Come on people stop believing the bullsh*t!!!!!! |

While I believe Dragoness is more informed on the legal aspects of it than I am, I know that illegals are getting assistance, because I have worked with some & they brag about it. The key word here is illegal. If they will break the law to get here & get a job, then they will break the law to get benifits. I am not racist, I have no proplem with legal well managed immigration. BY well managed I mean health checks, criminal background checks & proof that you can support yourself.

Oh & I should memtion that many people are cheating to get benifits people of all backgrounds, most born here. Again, if you work in low lovel jobs like I have you hear them bragging.

As for illegally receiving benefits from the government, more citizens get benefits illegally then illegals. It is easier for a citizen to dupe the system then illegals. There are more checks for illegals in our system. I worked for the welfare department for a long time and I know these laws. It is not the state governments that say that illegals get nothing from the government it is the federal government that said this and it has been on the books for alot longer than illegals have been the headlines here. People stop believing the hatemongering of these racist propagandists. It is bull. |

Come on people stop believing the bullsh*t!!!!!! Thats not entirely true. Their are some benefits that illegals and legals can recieve regardless of how long they ahve been here. Also, welfare, as are many other social programs funded by federal tax dollars, are administered by states. The states have various requirments regarding elegibility. I agree though, immigration is a huge problem in this countnry in its own right. We dont need missinformation clouding the issues. I will say that if the illigal and legal Mexican immigrants wanted me to support them more they would have marched with Amercian flags, not Mexican or any other country. I welcome future Americans to Immigrate to my wonderfull country. There is even a legal way to do it, albeit, seriously screwed up and in need of an overhaul. With that said though, I have no desire to fill my country with with Mexicans, Germans, or any other nationality. Just Americans, regardless of ethnic origins. |

You sir are misinformed. I know exactly what I am talking about. I worked for the government here and can to this day tell you who is eligible for welfare and what income limits apply. Just because you live here does not make you more knowledgable then I am . I have done the programs I worked for the government and know for a fact that illegals get nothing from the government and it is the feds who set the law and Colorado is following it to the letter. You must be one of those misinformed constituents who voted to have our illegal policies revamped here so they could stop illegals from getting welfare. LOL, it was soooo funny to me. The legislature here catered to these hatemongers in our state and sat sessions to duplicate the laws already on the books here. I laughed and cried because it was ludicrous to sit and recreate that that was already in effect and then WASTE MY TAX PAYER DOLLARS DOING IT!!!!! There was news coverage of this phenomenon last fall, News anchors reported NO CHANGE IN WELFARE ROLLS SINCE INTITUTION OF ILLEGAL LEGISLATION!!! Bet you can figure out why??!!!! NO ILLEGALS GOT WELFARE FOODSTAMP MEDICAID ....EVER!!!!! So keep on talking but you are the misinformed person on this subject, not me. |

With that said though, I have no desire to fill my country with with Mexicans, Germans, or any other nationality. Just Americans, regardless of ethnic origins. So, where did your ancestors come from? Are you Native American? We all come from somewhere else... All my ancestors are Amercicans. The second they stepped foot in this country thats what they became. I belive if you re read my post with an open mind, specifically "regardless of ethnic origins" you will understand my point more fully. |

Most people who entered this country even 100 or 150 years ago couldn't speak english and stuck with the traditions and language of their homelands, it takes a couple of generations to adapt to the melting pot aound us. |

Most of them didnt march carrying flags of their previous country either! The came here to be Americans, possibly even americans of Irish ancestory, but not Irish people living in American. My great grandmother on my mothers side was first generation and my ex wife was a naturalized citizen. They all believed and weanted to be Americans, not something else. I served in Iraq with two soldiers from the Phillipines. They joined the Ameican Army to be elegible to be Amercians. I also am serving now with American, who was born in Mexico City, immigrated here and naturalized. He is an American not a Mexican living in America. None of these people marched with flags from another country demanding rights in this one. I know what Im talking about. |
