Topic: When chatting with a potential friend/significant other

for me it depends, I do prefer the person can chat in normal english, but I won't let it get in the way of making a new friend or potential significant other. I'm more interested in whether or not the person can hold a meaningful conversation.

It doesn't matter to me. I do not make a point of using every hyphen, and spell check when I am chatting. To be that serious in life must truly make a person uptight in my opinion, and not someone I would want to expose my true weaknesses to. If you cannot be comfortable with who you are while just chatting, can you imagine living with that person? Save the grammer police/spellchick routine for the business place, and just relax while talking to someone you enjoy chatting with. Just how I feel, flame on laugh

I don't think that prefering clarity of expression necessarily makes you uptight. It just means that you like to say exactly what you mean and you would like others to do the same. flowerforyou

yes. for me its a turn off if someone can't spell right and know the difference between: They're, Their, There.

and how about your and you're?

Perhaps not in your eyes, but a person who has to correct another when chatting online is just to much of s stickler to me. There is not a person on here who cannot decipher what a person means in a sentence if they inadvertently type "their" instead of "there", or "to" instead of "too". I do agree that clarity is important, as well as a decent command of the English Language, however I do not think you should pick a person apart because they make errors while chatting. it is nitpicking in it's purist form to me, and just seems to be an attempt by some to put themselves into a position where they feel superior. Offering a counter point to another is also healthy, correct? Debate keeps the mind sharpie, least her in my kewl nek of da woods. Tell me you didn't understand what I just wrote in the previous sentence, lol

I agree to an extent. I don't correct others; I just like to try to use the skills that I was taught in school. I personally don't want to come across like a 5th grader. But sometimes I like to resort to vernacular, I say things like "cuz" and "prolly" just because I want to. But I understand the difference and anyone I am going to spend a significant amount of time with has to understand it as well. We all have preferences; people who never learned the basic rules of grammar are like nails on a chalkboard to me.

It is probably best I avoid posting in this forums then. It is just a matter of time before the vultures will start picking me clean like a bunch of vultures, lol.

I'm not going to strike you down with lightning bolts because you don't capitalize proper nouns or leave your participle dangling...

It's no less being uptight about grammar than something that's important to you, that might not be important to me.

"So what if I can't name the last four WWE champions. Don't get so uptight, it's just wrestling..."

See?

never did care for wrassling, sorry. I understand your point clearly, but to me restraint is no different in this case than a host of others that fall under "tact". We as a society have forced children into an underachieving school system. Most of these same kids that attend these schools do not have a good family unit to push them to better thmeselves, or even show up in many cases. I can overlook grammer far easier than some of the other things I am MANDATED by law to overlook, and accomodate, even though they are also due to a persons choice, and are correctable. I live in a glass house, and will not throw stones...........mainly because i go barefoot a lot, and value my ability to walk upright

Quick back and forth chatting is one thing. Email is another. I hold email to a much higher standard. I've gotten emails from people that see no need for any capitalization or punctuation whatsoever. This, to me, is either pure laziness or pure ignorance.

I've had that same problem. The Siamese likes to lay on the laptop keyboard cuz it's warm. I'll just get up for a minute, come back and there she is. With all kinds of programs open. Her English is so-so, but after all, she's Siamese.
