I've worked and raced at IHRA national events (not nearly as impressive). I was in an invite-only bracket race in the 1991 World Nationals at Norwalk. I got to run my $500 '72 Dodge Dart slant six car in front of 20,000 people Saturday and Sunday. We followed Alky Funnies on Sunday, so the crowd saw two 6.0 at 230 mph cars, looked back at the starting line, and saw a rusty old Doge doing an unneccessary burnout with an 18.24 dial in on the window. Brett Kepner announced to the crowd that I had the slowest car in competition that day. A-hole.

I actually like the IHRA better than NHRA cause I'm a fan of Nitro Coupes and Pro Mods

They both have their plusses and minuses. I do know the Bader's put about $7 million in improvements to Norwalk to ensure they got the national event...and it was already considered one of the nicest in the nation. Also, for the whole weekend (Thurs-Sunday), Norwalk was the biggest IHRA even, and would draw around 75,000 people. The NHRA event did twice as many people, and they could have sold more! I actually love the sportsman cars, Stock and Super Stock especially. The slow stockers make me grin!

I live in Tucson and we have the NHRA which has the Nationals I mentioned earlier we used to have the winter nationals until the old strip got confiscated and shutdown. the NHRA has no intention of bringing anything more than the lucas oil alky event or what ever it is now. but the IHRA has told the COunty who owns the track and the track manager that they would give Tucson a National event if they switched affiliations. but they're staying with NHRA.

Ummm, not very good management/leaadership. The fiasco when Norwlk defected in 2006 and they came out and said the next year's World Nationals would be at a planned track in Mansfield. That was meant as an FU to Norwalk, and they made a HUGE deal about it. The track still hasn't been built, and that kind of stuff is the tip of th iceberg. The owner of Norwlk was the President of IHRA, and he helped it grow, but when he stepped down, it has slowly slid backwards. I hope it recovers, we need at least two major sanctioning bodies, but I don't think it will come with current management and ownership. Just my opinion, mind you...

Nope, he sold his share in the IHRA, and the track will continue to grow stronger. Even in tough economic times they continue to be one of the best attended drag strips in the country. They do lots of racing April through October plus track rental. The IHRA needed them, they didn't need the IHRA. Bill, Sr., the previous president of the IHRA, has scaled back quite a bit, though he helps out at the track alot. He's been contemplating retirement for a few years now...his son does a great job in keeping the track on a growing path... I've been going there since '74!
