Topic: Why is Obama considered "black"?

I think that "guitar" has a legitimate question. If you didn't know any better, you would think from watching/reading/listening to the news that he is a black man of two black parents. This, we know, is not the case. But, the press, as others here have mentioned, is very enamored of this "first African-American president" thing. Just give me all the facts is all I ask. Ah, but that is way too much to ask, I fear, of today's media.

For myself I will just call him an American but I can't see calling him presidential material. He is too inexperienced to handle the job.

The reason Obama is considered to be black when he has a white mother and a black father goes back to Colonial America. Initially, the law was that any offspring of a slave mother was declared to be black and the legitimate "property" of a slave owner. Later that law was changed in that it declared that anyone with any African ancestry was deemed black and the legitimate "property" of a slave master.

The above is how we have, in the U.S., inherited the idea that anybody with any detectable African ancestry is "black", whether their complexions are ebony, caramel, quite pale or any shade in between.

However, there is another school of thought that states that a man is black or white by the way he defines himself. In Obama's case, he defines himself as being black since he is married to a black woman. Also he choses to be active, not in the white community, but in the black community. One final note is that he does not champion any white causes, but advocates black rights.

So he is a racist biracial person..okay.

cutelitldevilsmom.......

Why would you say such a stupid thing? Just because Obama prefers to identify himself with the black community does not make him racist. The man comes from the best of two worlds, the white world and the black world. He has chosen the black world and that does not make him racist. Additionally, what is wrong with being bi-racial? You seem like a bigot.

Actually i am biracial leahmarie ,i just wonder why he doesn't participate in all causes since he is the best of both worlds.I am far from a bigot..

cutelittledevil......

I stand corrected in that I misread your post.

i think that if he is elected, all of america will regret it

All of America regrets the idiot Bush ever darkening the door of the White House. I don't envy the next president, whatever color or combination of colors he/she may be.

america does not need a politian in the white house, it needs a businessman (or woman, but not Hillery). to run the country as a business and screw all the special interests

Forgive me but by what you said here, then If I married a black woman, take part in the black community, and fight for rights of blacks, I am black?

I think maybe you need to rethink that position pal. And before anyone calls me raicst, no I am not. But I am not black either. And I for one am leaning towards obama myself for president.

I would much ratehr have an inexperienced enw president, than one who is experienced in swindling, and hiding of facts and information. Or one who is expereienced in crooked poloitics

really? and who would be experienced at being president? that's such a lame comment. your opinion on whether or not he can handle it isn't really a valid arguement.

as if they do it all anyway, that's why the have their cabinet and advisors

daniel..... You misread my post or perhaps I was not clear. I just assumed that everyone realized I was talking about Obama, who is born of a white mother and a black father. At any event, that school of thought refers to people who are biracial, those whose parentage is both black and white. When you have the best of two races, sometimes one prefers one over the other.

Toast: Yes he would have a cabinet and advisors, but in the ene he would have to make the decisions and just because he has carisma does not mean he has the experience and background make sound decisions. Gee he has all of what 2 years in the senate and he has spent most of that time campaigning for the presidency. Based on that no one in their right mind would hire him to be the CEO of a large company what makes people think he can run this country based on that.
