Just a small cabin in the woods
A shack really One room, a woodstove A rocker and sagging old bed You built it for me Go there when you need to So tonight I pack my back pack Stuffing in warm clothes A few books In the morning I'll get a ride To the edge of the woods Then I'll walk Crunching on the fallen leaves Snapping fallen twigs Stepping into small piles of snow Not melted by the weakend sun Crisp cold air filling my lungs Crisscrossing the stream several times Listening intently for sounds Of anyone following me Knowing full well that no one is There in the small clearing Just ahead, hidden among the trees A sigh of relief escapes my lips I need to be here Peace slowly slips into my soul As I cross the clearing Setting my back pack down I sit for a moment on the steps Drinking in the quiet beauty of the morning Letting it wash over me Soothing away all the stress Just sitting here on the steps I haven't come here for a few years But you, you come every years Splitting wood and stacking it Airing it out Making sure no critters have taken up residence Just making sure that its ready if I need it With a sigh I rise up and unlock the door Smiling because nothings changed Walking in I set the pack on the bed Go over to the stove and open the door Wood at the ready Just waiting to be lit Strike a match Hold it just right Flame flickering out kissing the wood Fire started, warming the old shack I sit in the rocker looking out the window Rocking slowly back and forth Hiding away in my hidden solitude |
