*sighs*
if this is the link i think it is...i really feel that this is child abuse, and i literally cried when i watched it. |

not that i ever want my child to fall into water again (my now-6 year old holy terror fell into a rough reservoir outlet collection point when he was about 2 years old, the only thing that saved him was his puffy/quilted jacket...it was March and very cold!!)...i think that the ability to remain calm and float is a wonderful gift....NOT giving your child tools to help themselves in the first place could be considered child abuse!! Better a few tears and a living child than a dead one!!!

so very true, I am a parent of two and I did not even knew that a baby could be taught to float much less kick his or her legs to turn their bodies over in the water and back up to the surface...wish someone would have told me that when mine were young!!!But it is some very helpful info, and not child abuse if thats the case then wouldny swim lessons be child abuse????? again thanks for the info

the red cross ,the y and m local rec dept all give baby classes as young as 6 months..they say the best time to teach them is when they are infants..

the red cross has swimming readiness classes for infants...it's a fun and interactive time for parents and their babies...helps the kids to not fear water and be prepared to learn to swim...
this is NOT the same thing. while at the Y, you aren't going to just let go of your infant and walk away...leaving them screaming at the top of their lungs. you aren't going to leave them to possibly breathe in that water and choke... the american academy of pediatrics recommends that children not take actual swimming lessons until they are at least four, because they just aren't developmentally ready. i'm not saying that swimming with your child is a bad thing, but don't rely on a six-month old to be able to swim across the pool. |

but after these classes she just posted your child may be able to save their own life if they fall into water and not drowned! and as I seen when the guy picked up the child the child was smiling... i am sure the guy was there the whole time just in case something went wrong

there are several more videos on the same "class". some are pretty difficult to watch...the babies are screaming through the entire thing...
what about the false sense of security? if a parent thinks that their infant can swim, they might be a tad less vigilant. i want my child to survive, yes...but i question any method of training where so many tears are spilled. |

Better the tears then the death of a child...
if you don't like this post then don't read... there are tons of parents who'd rather, have taught there children drowning prevention, then to have lost them to the depths of the water... this is not a debate thread...but your opinion is welcomed.... just useful information, for those who'd like to prevent a child from drowning.... after all, it was video taped so someone was there... Bright_eyes, thanks for the support, and very nice to meetcha... |
