Your eyes open

A simple word, music to my ears
Your eyes close
You drift away
I pick up my pen
Still talking softly to you
You reach out for my hand
I take your hand
Thinking back
To when you were small
I look at you and thats what I see
So small, so fragile
I raise my other hand
Wipe away a tear
Yeah I know the worse part is over
But I can cry now
I know you'll be ok
You sink deeply into sleep
Letting go of my hand
I pick up the pen
Start writing again
Knowing that soon
You'll really wake up
I run the story through my head
Once again
Got to have it right
Can't fail you
Nurse walks by
Asks if I need anything
I dig in my jeans
Pull out a couple of dollars
Ask for a diet pepsi
She waves away the money
Don't worry about it
She says
I sigh
Say Thank you
Glance back at you
Sleeping
Chest rising and falling
All is as its supposed to be
I close my eyes
Breathing a great sigh of relief
