Never been on a sympathy date, but I've been on "friend of a friend" fixup dates, with no real expectations, that turned into 3- to 6-month entanglements.

Never heard of that kind of date but avoid fix up dates like the plague; good way to loose two friends because they think they are doing some kind favor and the date is always uncomfortable you didn't pick them yourself. Sympathy date sounds kind or stuck on yourself. Unless you mean taking someone out to cheer them up and I like doing that. That is a great way to make new friends closer.
