Why do they have a "General Discussion" forum AND a "Chit Chat" forum here??

Can someone explain to me what the samhill the difference is???

Think of something that could be described as "general discussion" that couldn't also be described as "chit chat".
Can't can you?

The description for the Coffee House forum: "Come on in if you just feel like chatting"

And the description of the Gen. Discussion: "If it doesn't fit anywhere else, this is the place"

What the... ???

With the sports/religion/current events/parenting/help/entertainment forums I think "chit chat" pretty much sums up everything else.



And how on God's green earth do they determine something is "chatty" and not "general" in order to move the dang thread?

I don't know Aaron they keep moving them.. Sometimes I think it's like my assistant's filing method.. Whatever the mood is that day and who knows where the hell it will go the next.....

Well, the General forum existed before the Chit Chat.

What happened was that there were a lot of people making threads in General Discussion, called So-and-So's Coffeehouse, or So-and-So's Bar, which were intended to serve as casual conversation areas. We wound up with enough of those that the admins decided to give them their own forum. It's just like when other new forums are added; a lot of the time it's just because there have been enough posts in General about a certain subject that it warrants a separate forum.

So now we have a Computers forum and a Movies & TV forum, etc., which we didn't start out with.

After awhile, Chit Chat was designated as the proper place for threads like "I'm bored," or "Anybody wanna chat?" -- I think it's mainly because those are thematically similar to the original concept of the forum itself -- casual conversation about nothing in particular.

It's kind of a gray area, in a lot of cases, because some topics could legitimately be put in more than one forum, so sometimes it's just a matter of interpretation.

So, to answer your question, the intention is for General to be about real subjects that don't fit into any of the other forums, whereas Chit Chat is for the bars and coffeehouses and bored people who really have no desire to talk about anything other than how bored they are. It's not a perfect system, but I'd rather see it this way than have to slog through a hundred "bored" topics in General -- which is exactly what was happening some months back.

ya know, be happy this place has the different forums...

before the swarms of people from CS came over, before the droves of Mingle came over..

when i first started here, there was NO moderating system at all, we dealt with less than favorable posters on our own, we "ganged up" on 'em and they saw "the error of their ways", either appologized or we did, or they left ..period.

when i first started, there were 4 main forums, General Discussion, Relationship Advice, Poems, Quotes, and Songs, and then Sex and Dating..

sure there were the ones for Bugs, and Feedback...but really, that's about it..


there's times i miss the older days...this was OUR site, WE took care of it

Awww and those forums would not have to be moved all the time if people would take a minute and figure out were they fit in.


If it is to say good mornig, good evening ,good night, I'm Bored or just everyday life stuff with no topics involved those belong in the Chit Chat forums.

General actually is for threads that have a topic that don't deal with a relationship, sexually question, ect for those all have forums for them.

If it is a question that does not have a forum then it should go to General. There are times tho some can actually be considered to go in more than one forum then it can be left in General.

Like the youtube link maybe it should go in poems quotes or songs but..... then lots of those youtubes are also jokes so it is left in General since it can go in several.

But now if everyone would just take the extra time and put them in the correct forum it would be sooooooooo nice. Well at least they are being moved to the correct forum instead of just deleted and make you redo it in the correct one.
