I started a new job, driving 60 miles a day & my old wagon is thirsty & tired. I have been test driving cars, so far my top choices are a Ford Focus ZX3 & a Saturn SC2. They both get about the same milage (38 hiway). Any thoughts?

Both should work well as a commuter car.

I prefer Toyota, then Honda..but they are going to be more expensive.

Yeah, i'm trying to keep it under 5 thousand found a 2001 Focus with 63 K miles for that, the Saturns are cheaper & seem to have a great reputation, I love the little Focus hatchback, but know nothing about them.

Is yours an automatic? I am test driving 5 speeds & was told they should get 35-38.

well there is always the Toyota Yaris (I have it) that gets better than 40mpg, or the Prius (a hybrid and costs 2x as much), which gets like 51 on the highway. The Yaris I have has been good to me, and since I've already had 2 Toyotas, it was my choice again. The mini cooper is also way up there on the EPA list. If you want to see the EPA list, go to

That sounds good. I have a 93 Festiva that gets 41 but it is in the shop, having strange electrical problems. I'ts left me stranded a few times at night in the middle of no where. I hope it can be fixed, but it's not reliable anymore. 183K front end crunched in by a deer. lol I'm thinking a derserve something a little nicer now! Currently driving a big comfy Mercury Sable wagon, but it's killing me on gas!

I would love a Prius, but no way on my budget. I feel guilty driving my wagon built for 8 passengers, but it was the best buy I found by far when I bought it. I needed something immediatly & it was cheap & reliable.

i have a five speed automatic...and the gas mileage that they give you is an average. i mean you can get that. hell you can get even higher gas mileage. its all on how you drive it. and its a good little car. its my second one. i had a 2000 and now a 2005. they are very reliable and can be a ton of fun to drive. i mean i have taken mine up to about 110 mph. was awesome! i would recommend it to anyone who is looking for an expensive fun little car that looks pretty stylish.

Thanks for your input. I havn't met anyone else who has one. I had fun test driving 2. They are really cute cars & & a small hatchback suits my needs. Just me & a little terrier riding shotgun.
Great profile. You seem like a honest, professional young lady that has it together, & you are good looking too.

Update:
Getting the Saturn. It's cheaper. The Festiva has been declared dead & taken off life support. I am keeping the wagon as backup though the winter, no one else will pay what is worth to me. Maybe I will get a Focus when the wagon is used up.

Thanks for the input everyone.
