I welcome all opinions...I realize that there are reasons why people can't express themselves correctly...which is not who this was aimed at...I said pet peeve...not reason to hang them...keep the opinions coming...

I guess I see this as another kind of preference -- just like some people say they're looking for someone in a certain age group, certain body type, certain religion, whatever -- for me, I couldn't be involved with someone who didn't have at least a rudimentary command of English. If people want to get all bent out of shape because some of us care about literacy, and because we want a partner who does as well, that's really not my problem....

I catch all kinds of crap for my other preferences; so there's no reason why this one should be any different....!

I'm not sure what the obsession is with spelling and grammer. I know that I make typing errors and really, half the time could careless. I do think that it becomes a problem when you have no idea what someone is saying, but just picking people apart isn't a good thing in my opinion. I think that some people have a harder time expressing themself through a computer and hammering on them for mistakes will probably make it harder for them. JMO Probably doesn't count for much, but there it is.drinker

finally someone who has some sense!!!

I understand what you guys are saying. If someone has an honest problem such as dyslexia or something like that, I can understand their difficulties. My problem is with people who purposely make errors because they think it looks cool or it is considered "the latest fad".

I no wut u r sain, gurl!

Spellcheck can't help you with there/their/they're and quiet/quite and to/too/two and on and on...

Those words are all spelled correctly but used incorrectly.

After thinking about this since the original post I've decided I don't like spellcheck and programs like it. At least not as it applies to personals profiles. That's similar to other "false advertising" practices employed on these sites.

- Old pictures to make you look younger/better/thinner/less bald.
- claiming to be divorced when you're just separated or separated when you're really married and looking to get some action on the side (mostly a guy's thing)
- claiming to be younger than you really are (ladies? huh Yeah, I know - a LOT of guys do that too)
- failing to mention you live in mommy and daddy's basement
- omitting the fact that don't have a car/job/home
- using spellcheck to disguise your lack of intelligence or education

See what I mean?

I am HEAR to complain about those who like QUITE nights in front of the fire, don't like TO many tattoos, and spell every other word wrong on their profile.

Spellcheck will get you a much more intelligent set of responses! Literacy is sexy!

my 2 cents

HEY Hey hey now! If she's foreign you have to cut her some slack! I give anyone an "E" for effort if they're from another country and I can understand what they're trying to say. Heck, I speak just enough Spanish to get myself arrested in some border town so anyone who can communicate in two or more languages is intelligent enough in my book. Well, at least until they prove otherwise.

as a teacher, the whole spelling thing irritates me, too. and, yes, i use shorthand on here and do not use caps, but i can spell. laugh laugh it may annoy me, but i don't say anything. i don't want to offend anyone by correcting them.

I hate to chime in and get hate mail but I have to agree to a certain extent. I will never swear my puctuation is perfect or that I don't have a typo, I also use im/post shorthand while doing both and at times in personal emails... However, then and than are not the same and neither are women and woman. Some profiles have those mistakes a lot. The then and than is not that big of a deal but if a man doesn't know if he wants a woman or women then I'm going to pass, I'm not looking to be part of a harem...

Ok hate mail will being drinker

Its okay if you want an English major but school was so 25 yrs ago.I forget all the grammar rules, make common spelling mistakes and (gasp)use slang in everyday discourse.I am not here to correct spelling, punctuation or grammar.I am here to find love.To each their own.

* Forgetting that mommy is possessive also and requires an apostrophe s.

I've met many highly intelligent people who can't spell very well or who may not structure grammatically correct sentences. Intelligence comes in many forms. Wasn't it Einstein who had problems with simple math?

This form of communication is rushed, and it's not something you expect to get published. Just type a quick note and go. Who cares if it's 100% right? Are we looking for potential English teachers or potential friends and mates? You can't be friends with someone who doesn't use perfect grammar?

Sure you can. flowerforyou

This has been a very fun debate...I never said that my opinion was right, and if you read my profile...I write like a dyslexic on crack. I am just a stickler (freak) for common spelling and grammar...keep 'em coming!
