I know musical tastes are personal and subjective. There is no universal best, but this man is my favorite electric guitarist, ever. His playing, showmanship, and songwriting puts him in a different league than anyone else in my opinion.
The four movements of the break in "All Along The Watchtower" have never been bettered, in my opinion. His citation in the RRHOF says, "arguably the greatest instrumentalist in the history of rock music." The guitar gods of the 60's, Clapton, Page, Green, Harrison, Gilmour, Lee, Allman, Garcia, Beck, Richards, Robertson, etc. have never questioned this statement. Once any of them heard him they surrendered to the obvious. The Jimi Hendrix Experience - All Along The Watchtower |

What makes Jimi such a significant contributor to the music scene was the fact he was one of the first musicians to effectively use feedback.
Till Jimi made it music, feedback was like nails on a chalkboard to the music industry. In my youth Henrix was music always best when cranked all the way up. As I age, my taste in music has changed a bit. While I still get an ocassional hankering for some Jimi, not as often. I tend to listen to more clean, crisp guitar lately. Still LOVE his acoustic work. I have to totally agree about Jimi.
In addition to being an incredible guitarist, he was also showman. Just watch his performance at Monterey Pop. And the solo on "Watchtower" is one of the greatest ever. |
