Emotional overthinking is a waste of energy, and dangerous.
Occupy and re-train the thinker with useful, practical, real life, non emotional problems, to distract it. Avoid philosophical analysis, the arts, and religion, which can lead back to emotional. Cold hard mathematics, physics, and mechanics, will take all your overthinking without harm. When the mind drifts back to unwanted overthinking, notice how it got there, and avoid those patterns. re-train the brain. These days I under think. Sometimes ignorance really is bliss. Some may think I'm stupid. Who cares. Ha. |

Overthinking (thinking too long on something when simple action is required) can be bad but thinking and imagination in itself is not.
Usually what happens when we overthink a problem is we tend to cloud the reasoning with fear and expectations. This is where the ability to comprehend the reality before you becomes important. I like to write flash fiction. I often get stuck in my creative process because I tend to overthink too many details. "Does the dragon have wings at its shoulders or midsection?" "Why and how did those wings develop where they are?" "How do they affect the dragons motion?" or Just write dragon and let the reader figure out the details in their own minds. Overthinking can get in the way of interpersonal relationships too. Relationships need reasoning and critical thinking but when we overthink things we start making assumptions about the reality based on fears and expectations. |
