Topic: Help with a music purchase... | |
---|---|
Okay, possibly wrong forum with all the new forums out there. Apologies in advance to the moderators if I am in the wrong place.
So, my holidays are done. Insert sigh of relief. Doing Christmas with the new beau and want to get his boy a small gift. He and I have discussed music and he is very much in to Rap and Hip Hop. Of course, the child is young enough to not know from the original old school stuff and really good production stuff. Spent some time listening and forgot just how PG-13 or even R rated some of the stuff can be. Any ideas for a good cd for an 11 year old boy on some old school stuff? Right now I'm leaning towards Run DMC. Any help is appreciated. M |

Geez! I'm getting OLD when Run DMC is considered "old school"! Grab some Van Halen, Aerosmith, G&R...will give him a good start on the old basics!

Run DMC would be the best choice. Not being a fan of "rap" music or hip hop, there aren't any good CD's in that category, but for an eleven year old I think that one would be ok.

dj jazzy jeff and the fresh prince...ah...what memories...
rolling down the road in my mother's car with my friends...sort of without mom's knowledge or permission...um... and hearing, "my parents went away for a week's vacation, and, they left the keys to the brand-new porche, would they mind? ah, well, of course not!" on not one but TWO stations...when i'd NEVER heard it before... made it home ten minutes before the police arrived. mom's best friend had driven by the house and called the cops since the car was missing. |

If he's that young, maybe it's not too late to steer him in the right direction. Get him some REAL music. Something like Led Zep, Beatles or even Steve Miller. Maybe even skip that and go staight to Metallica!

Too late to steer the child to what any of us might consider real music. Tried to go that way in conversation and explain that lots of 'his' music samples stuff his Dad and I grew up with.
Great idea on Fresh Prince and DJ Jazzy Jeff. GrandMaster Flash can be a bit adult, UK. So, that is out. Heck even uncut Beastie Boys are out. I may say heck with it and get the kid BareNaked Ladies. Me and my boy love BNL! Or the funniest is to hear my 7 year old sing Fat Bottom Girls by Queen. |
