The last time I was called into the office for a chat I ended up out on the street.

I wouldn't flirt in my office, it's mostly guys, with 1 woman who looks like she's ready to quit or have a breakdown. Oh for some office hotties.

Chat? Not really.

I've found different types of people "flirt in the office" for different reasons and in different ways.

Some are actually being friendly, and that's their humor and personality, it's just coming out of their mouth, or shaping their gestures, and ten seconds later they've forgotten about it because it doesn't matter.

Some want the flirtation to be reciprocated, they're interested in more, possibly dating or whatever.

Some use it as a defense mechanism to hide insecurities, a lack of personality, fears, etc.

Some use it as a group forming tool, to determine boundaries and hierarchy.

Some use it as a means of manipulation and/or judgment.
Like if you flirt back (over time) they can use it as a kind of social blackmail, how you're being inappropriate and interpreted what they said incorrectly, it's "your" fault, you're sending out inappropriate vibes. They're just being friendly/nice.
If you don't flirt back, well then you're the a-hole that's unfriendly and closed off and not a team player.

Met my ex in work. The marriage was a nightmare. Enuff said

I flirted with the boss every day in the office. Didn't do either of us much harm and it was fun. Even had a few stolen kisses too.

If i'm at work, i'll generally go to the
