Maybe people are not seeking more obstacles than necessary? There is a great obstacle overcoming distance between nations, let alone difference in custom and culture. It may be 'easier' to start on a common ground that includes geography and culture, which by the way, are often closely related as well.

To add to what you've explained, the obstacles in world-wide dating sites such as this one can easily reveal themselves...distance, custom, culture (especially how males in some cultures treat women) and it can be frustrating to those seeking partners far distant from themselves.
