This hurricane that is about to hit the Carolina's is unprecedented in the sense that it will also stall over those states and drop up to 40 " of rain
My grandkids live-in Jacksonville and thank God they are en route up here to N.J. right now.
I have a house there which I don't know if I will still have come Monday

I pray That the people down there get out before it is too late .

This hurricane is as bad as they get

I read where they now have mandatory evacuation but in many cases shelters will not open because they can not take a cat 4 hit.
Where do all these people then go ?

According to the hurricane tracking website from NOAA there are five storms in the N Atlantic region.
Two are hurricanes, one is a tropical depression and two are potential formations.

I hope the Red Cross is ready down there. It wasn't until day 5 that we saw the first red cross truck after super storm Sandy hook up here. The elderly needed help. Medicine and the RC was nowhere to be found . It was residents from other states that bailed us out with food. Water. Blankets..And needed stuff for the elderly and infants
I just hope the RC does the right thing for those folks that can't get out.

I'll stay put for a Cat 1 or 2 but if its a 3,4 or 5 its foolish to try to weather it out. For a cat 4 storm, there's not much you can do to protect things from it. You might get lucky but what kind of fool plays Russian Roulette with a pistol full of bullets?

There is also a chance that Florence will walk right up the coast.
If you look at the national radar loop at intellicast you can see there is a easterly flow of winds moving up and across the north eastern states.

http://www.intellicast.com/National/Radar/Current.aspx?location=default&region=jef&animate=true

If Florence pushes inland, there will be tornados and flooding from the mixing weather patterns. Then, after things die down a bit there will be Helene to deal with. Plus if Isaac "threads the needle" it could grow and threaten the Gulf.

Its certainly going to be an interesting September.

Guess no one remembers Floyd..
There was so much flooding..there were pigs floating down the streets..as Smithfield is a huge hog producing area..

In talking to my son before they leave Jacksonville NC and start heading up here to Jersey he told me it had rained down there most everyday for the last month. The water table is already very high. . Where is another 30 -40 inches of water to go?
Up here during Sandy the water table was high, when the storm cae and started dumping water it came right up thru the ground and right into the houses there was no stopping it..
And that storm is nothing compared to what is heading into the south

I agree, People tend to hyper-focus on one thing and forget that we live in a dynamic universe where things effect other things.
I live a mile from the beach.
I'm most concerned with the flooding (storm surge) of hurricanes. Winds are secondary up to a Cat 3.
Further North the concern is more on the tornadoes and flooding due to rainfall.

I bet there are people with $3000 tvs who don't want to spend money on a hotel, so they'll stay.

Hopefully it won't be a repeat of last year. I pray all who are in it's path are safe

Looks like I'll be getting back home in the Keys in time for Helene.

My work place in the Keys just now fully opened after the damage Irma did a year ago.

I was watching the news a hour ago and they were interviewing one guy who had a house near the beach. He said he was staying and he thinks it is all a lot of hype......
I then turned on the weather channel and the satellites are picking up 83 foot high waves in the hurricane

Talk to family in NC today, they are not on the coast but near.

Many in harms way are evacuating.

Everyone is bracing for rain and wind Friday. Have food and water stored up.

I pray for All who are in harms way !

My family will move further South to a hotel if need be, they said.

They have a very nice Home there. But life is more important.

Thank God they can afford to get out, if nessessary !

Waves can be severe out at sea. What is bad about a hurricane coming to shore isn't the waves, its the surge. The surge is an increase in the height of the water body as a whole. Waves happen on top of the surge.
Its the difference between smacking the water in your tub and pushing the water as a mass. Its the same effect as a tsunami.
Hurricanes are areas of low pressure, low pressure equals higher water height. The stronger the hurricane the lower the pressure the higher the surge. Wind blows the waves but the surge is dependant on pressure.

For a cat 4 hurricane, only a fool would try to remain on the beach. But, some people are just too stupid to be alive.

Hey, get off the tracks there's a train coming.
Nah, its just a hoax.
Splat.

1:00 PM EDT Thu Sep 13
Location: 33.6°N 75.9°W
Moving: NW at 10 mph
Min pressure: 955 mb
Max sustained: 105 mph

Its now downgraded to a Cat 2
This probably happened with the change of water temperature when it got over the continental shelf.
Tonight it could weaken more with the shallower water and being night.
It should make landfall in the morning.
