Time is short, I'm paying packers/movers.
free help would reduce those costs. If you want to come, I'll make margaritas and my highly acclaimed guacamole. I've never moved myself -- always had corporate moves -- spoiled. |

omg three walkin closets full of shoes are we planning on opening a shoe store or getting an extra apartment for them? Probably a shoe store with multiple outlets. There was another two walk in closets full of shoes in the attic |

Hope your move goes well.
Are moving to another country? Does your destination have a Welcome Wagon? http://www.welcomewagon.com/ Have you looked at the City Data for your destination? http://www.city-data.com/ Another trick I did before relocating was to pull up my destination city on Google Maps (satellite view) and type an assortment of keywords into the search. It allowed me to get an idea how far away many of the business and recreational centers were from my new home. Its also handy info to look up the city, county and state official websites and look at the laws and ordinances that you will need to know. Does your car need an inspection to be legal? Are there strict leash laws for pets? That kind of stuff. My son lives in a town where there is an ordinance about how high his grass can get or he is fined. The city has a crew that goes out and measures people's grass, LOL, I've seen them do it. Plus, you speak of an apartment. In my apartment you cannot have anything on the lawn, I had to get rid of my firepit and put my grill on the porch. Have you talked with ANY of your new neighbors yet? They can tell you how it really is. Apartment leases and rule books are guidelines. Actual experience will vary. For boxes, I found that liquor store boxes are the best and most come with lids or are cut in such a way the top is still attached. Auto parts stores usually break apart the boxes by separating the flaps. Get yourself a good taping machine. Pick up some labels large enough to hand write the contents of the box. I used notebook paper halves covered in clear tape. Try to mark the top and the side with the contents and destination. It helps a lot, especially if a storage unit is in your future. I also invested in a small hand truck. I used it while moving but I continue using it to carry groceries up the long 'hallwayfromhell' and to move furniture around. It cost me about $25 six years ago. Keep a log book of the boxes by number, destination and a contents summary. Take pictures of the contents of the box before you seal it. You can use clothing and linens to wrap fragiles. Tape all open pantry boxes shut, pack cans upside down. Use plastic ties to bind hanger wear in manageable groups. Roll clothing inside linens to prevent fold lines. Use string, rope or plastic ties to bind shelving and irregular mechanical items. Wash/clean everything. Including trash bins. I keep my packing boxes when I buy new appliances. I still have my TV box and all the packing material, my computer box, my blender box and so on. I've moved twice with them and not so much as a scratch. If you have to disassemble something, put the screws and little parts in a ziplock bag and label it. Get one of those lil plastic trays with compartments and a lid for picture hangers and assorted hooks and stuff. Wrap your feelings in bubble wrap. I have one feeling left and I keep it in bubble wrap because it never fails, It gets stepped on a lot. There are some things you will want to leave behind. As a rule of thumb, always leave resentment and bad attitudes. They hinder your new home setup and cause problems during the move. If possible, pre-ship a good supply of love, That way when you finally get to your destination its there waiting for you. |
