Shallow

Why do people have to be so shallow
worried about what others allow
so much that they deny themselves
the pleasure of sharing real selves

"Oh what people will say"
"if I walk with you today"
"with your physical faults"
"I just can't live with the thought!"

"I will shun you as unworthy"
"gently but very firmly"
"In hope you will forget"
"so we both have no regrets"

Living their lives in a fog
of fantasy that all are "agog"
of the self they choose to show
that is not real and will never grow

Hopefully one day they learn
realness will always earn
a more meaningful blessed life
Shallowness causes nothing but strife.
