Why not?
Sex triggers the brain to release emotional bonding chemicals.
The difficulty comes when you try to fight those.
When you take a long time apart so they don't influence memory as strongly.
Or you take advantage of one person responding to the chemical changes in their brain while you fight them yourself. i.e. using sex as a means of power and control and manipulation.

There's no real problems with relationships based on sex because of sex.
The problem comes from the personality's of the people involved and all the crap in their life outside of sex that interferes with what sex actually does. IOW ego.

IMO more relationships should be based on sex and they should be taken seriously.

Or more simply GIGO. Sex is a bad basis for a "serious" relationship if the people having sex are bad people or they are pursuing sex for bad reasons.
Serious relationships can and should be based on sex.
Relationships would be far easier if they didn't have to deal with identity and image and social training that sex is "bad" or "taboo."

Sex makes people feel good, happy, more gregarious, more confident, reduces stress, and naturally bonds people together.

Might as well say "serious cuisine shouldn't be based on flavor."

With antibiotics, vaccines, cures, ovulation apps, birth control, abortions...it's like you can eat cake constantly without gaining weight if you really wanted to.

Other than that, whether or not a relationship is a "serious" relationship is purely your choice and whether or not you wish to take the relationship and other person "seriously."

I've always been in favor of having secret trysts, long slow sober romantic evenings, wild childishly selfish quickies, and demented, twisted dark fantasy sex, all with the one woman I love, who loves me.
