I dunno that Big Sur is as treacherous as the drive around Crater Lake. No guard rails and that first step is easily 1-2000 feet.

Blah blah blah, try the ten hour drive out of the Northeast exit to Yellowstone Park in October in the dark through the Beartooth highway, ten thousand foot mountains, no guard rails, and two national forests in a Dodge Caravan filled with small children, in-laws and a cranky (future ex) wife to get to that bastion of civilization the Crow Agency.
