In what exact context?

In some applications, form is more important, in others, substance is.

The common assumption made by most people who pose this question using those words, is that anyone who is thoughtful, or serious, or "good" in the way that the person asking it desires, will say they pick substance over form.

But that assumes that what MATTERS is the substance, and not the form.

It also ignores the fact that in many situations, when presented with a single choice between form or substance, the ONLY correct response is to refuse to choose or participate in the choice.

Taking mate-hunting for example. If what you want, is someone to love and desire who loves and desires you, and you are told to choose between someone who looks great, but doesn't like you, and someone who likes you, but you can't abide their looks, the correct thing to do is move on and keep looking.

Because in that situation, what is "form" and what is "substance," actually change places as you try to choose. If you choose what you think is the "substance," (the unattractive person who likes you), you will actually be doing so, in order to obey the "FORM," of having an official relationship, and gaining the philosophical approval of who ever wants you to choose "substance over form." And the "substance" you will get, is a mate who learns to hate you, because they know you can't stand them, and are only spending time with them out of guilt or egotism.

OK
With substance my imagination can create form

With form my imagination would be working overtime trying to create substance.

So my either or choice would be for substance:tongue: frustrated explode winking

If I can't have the substance without the form then I pass. It's like bread without butter, a car without steering wheel, shoes with no laces...

form or substance? guys what would you really pick if you cannot have both?

I am going to assume in mating only, in dating and picking a partner since this is a dating website.

I am going to assume you are basically asking "looks or personality? what if you could only choose one in your single chance at dating and marriage?"

I would choose form rather than substance, if that's what you're asking.

Since there is substance in so many other alternatives and areas I feel it would be more beneficial to commit to "form" for the purposes of mating, and then picking and choosing among the billions of alternative "substance" areas that aren't related to dating in any way.

Not to mention, if the woman I choose is only "form" then I could easily pursue "substance" with another woman who also chose "form."
If there is no "substance" to "form" then she really wouldn't mind.

Unless of course in your scenario there is some sort of alien like race controlling humans mandating the choice of "form or substance?"
Then I would choose neither and join the rebels and fly an xwing and have a lightsaber and be awesome, hypothetically.

If you are asking the question of "aesthetically pleasing hedonism, or "abstemious abnegating epistemology" I would choose hedonism if I could, the latter tends to lead to nothing but more problems. The former only when people breed past natures ability to organically produce food, or create more men than women.

WOW did not expect an almost equal choice between the two. I am quite impressed with both views and more so the honest opinions that were stated. But for us women well at least those who are like me we are more flattered to hear we are admired due to our substance rather than form.

BUT please do not criticize our form as we are most times sensitive to that subject LOL

Ah, I didn't get the question at all... I thought you were asking about booze, cigs, or other substances. In that sense, form of substance.

Neither I.
I thought it was more criticism of men but I was going on the OP,s past history so perhaps I was wrong to judge.

What makes you think that a person of "substance" is necessarily complicated?

Well.if we are talking looks over personality.?.. I think everybody would like a little bit of both but!!.. hard to find that all in one package... for example you might meet somebody that is really good looking but has a bad personality... you might find someone that isn't very good looking but has a great personality.... and then there's always the question of.. sex appeal.. sexual stamina.. their intellect their emotional availability.. the list is endless... but if I had to pick personality or looks...hmmm.. let's just say I have a lot of friends that have great personalities...lol..

i did mention i had very limited experience and with the few people of substance ive had the honor to encounter they are complicated in a good way that youd have to really know them before you can see whats underneath. Simple will never describe their minds it will be something more shades
