The Beach Part IV (Epilogue) Driving off in the pouring rain, with a look of disdain on his face, he pulls up to his loves house in astonishment. There was an ambulance there with it's lights flashing, police standing guard to keep the peace, and people all around wondering what was going on inside the house. He was all a frantic. He stops his car just short of the crowd in the streets, jumps out of his car, slipping and stumbling trying to get to the house. Getting to the front door, a cop stops him, "Let me in, I am her husband." Lying just to get through the door. The EMT's were in the bathroom, him still in question as to what is going on. "What's going on in here? What happened?" Out of breath, rain dripping off his head, looking down and seeing the EMT's performing CPR on her. 'Oh my God' he thought. "And who are you?" an officer asks, holding him back. "A very good friend. We are very close." Still panting for breath, "I need to see her." "Stand back sir, please. The EMT's are doing everything they can. Please stay back." The officer holds him, while he still peers in to look at the scene. Towels covering her wet body, the tub still full of water, and they are doing compressions on her chest. He backs off away from the officer, 'Oh God, why couldn't I have been here. This wouldn't be happening.' He hangs his head as he wipes the excess of water from his hair. He looks back up to the officer and asks, "What happened?" "Sir, we believe this may be a possible suicide. You wouldn't happen to know anything of why she would do this do you?" He knew he left her in distraught earlier that day, but he didn't want to let on to the cops as to lead to suspicion. "I have no idea. I really haven't a clue." "I've got rhythm," said an EMT. "She has a pulse." "Is she going to make it? Is she going to be all right?" With excitement and hope in his voice he asks the EMT's. "Sir, we have to get her on the ambulance and to the hospital right away. She's alive but doesn't look too well." They put oxygen on her to keep her breathing and put her on the gurney. They gather their equipment and roll her out the door. The cops spread an avenue through the house and out the front door, keeping people backed away, as the EMT's make their way to the doors of the ambulance. They load her in and shut the doors. He gets in the car and follows the ambulance to the hospital. He stays cautiously behind so in case they have to break he won't run in the back of them keeping them from making it to the hospital. The ambulance pulls into the emergency room drive, open the back doors to the ambulance, and he peers in seeing an EMT on her doing chest compressions. 'Oh no' he thought. "What happened?" he asked in more distraught than before. "She went under arrest on the way here." he said breathing heavily from exhaustion. 'Oh God, let her be all right.' he looks up to the gray-blackened sky. A low rumbling of thunder bellows. 'Did He just answer me.' The medical staff came out in a hurry assisting the EMT's and they rush her in to a private room in emergency. A nurse holds him back, "Sir we'll be with you as soon as we can. Take a seat in the waiting room." Sitting in the waiting room, fidgeting...pacing back and forth....sitting clutching his hands...pacing again. He goes to the restroom, goes to the water fountain, paces some more. All this in a couple of hours. It seemed like an eternity. It's late afternoon, the thunder had ceased a little, the sky still ashen dark. The rain had let up some. Time is just not moving fast enough for any answers. 'What's taking the doctors so long? Is she all right?' The most important question that is flowing through his head right now is. 'Why would she do this?' At that time, the doctor comes out of the OR soaked in sweat and he notices some blood spots on his scrubs. 'Blood? Why blood?' "What happened in there doc? What went on in there?" "Well son, we thought we were going to lose her. So we had to do emergency heart compression to get the heart going. We had to cut her open to massage the heart. She had a bleeder, but we stopped it. She's alive but in a coma right now. We are going to monitor her throughout the night to make sure everything is going to be okay. We don't know if she sustained any brain damage or not, because we don't know how long she stayed submerged under the water. We won't know until she wakes up." "How long will she be in this coma?" Tears start welling up in his eyes. "We don't know yet. It will take some time and a healing process. The body heals itself while she sleeps and it's only a matter of time." The doctor pats him on the back and shakes his hand, "If she is any kind of fighter, and responds well to your voice, she just may come out of this pretty well." The doctor walks off, past the double doors of the OR, disappears and he sits down. A nurse comes out of the doors and he stands up to ask her, "Nurse can I go in to see her? To sit with her?" "We are fixing to move her to recovery and as soon as we get all the equipment situated I will come and get you. Be patient, she will be all right." He goes over to the coffee machine and gets him a cup to warm his rain soaked body. An orderly walks over concerned, "Hey man, how would you like to trade those wet things in for some scrubs so you can get dry?" He looks down at his clothes and feels how chilled he is and tells the orderly, "That would be great. Thanks." The orderly takes him to a room where he can change out of his wet clothes and get into some hospital issued scrubs for expectant fathers. He almost fit right in with the rest of the staff. He feels a lot warmer now. He comes out of the room and sees the orderly standing by, shakes the mans hands, "Thanks, I appreciate it." "No problem man. I hope she makes it." He walks off down the hall and disappears. Just then the nurse comes around the corner and says for him to follow her. She takes him into recovery where her bed is, hearing all the little blips on the monitor, all the tubes running into her, the IV bottles hanging on its stand. "You can pull up a chair and sit right there if you like." The nurse pointing to the side of the bed. He takes the chair and situates himself alongside the bed. Oh she looks so helpless. But yet, so beautiful lying there. "Thanks." He says to the nurse as she takes the curtain and surrounds it around them. He couldn't sit but just a minute before he had to get up and fidget. Too many unanswered questions going through his head right now. As he ponders each question, he looks out the window of the room and watched the rain come down. Dripping down the plate glass reminding him of the tears that befell upon her face when he left her. Distant flashes of lightning still flash now and then, a low rumbling of thunder bellows here and again. A tear wells up in his eye and falls down his cheek. He sees his reflection staring back at him. Like a spirit, it's as if the reflection were talking back at him..."She'll be all right...don't stop believing...just don't stop believing." Just then, a flash of lightning wakes him from his stare. He wipes off his cheeks, turns to look at her, lying so peaceful in bed. His legs start to feel weak, so he takes up the chair that was beside the bed, sits down and reaches for her hand to hold onto it, to see if she would respond. As he listens to the thunder roll outside and the rain hit against window, he feels himself get mesmerized by the hypnotic sounds the weather is producing outside. He nods off to sleep, as he lays his head next to the hand he is holding, hoping to give her comfort. He picks up where the dream left off. He is on top of her, caressing and kissing her. The wind picks up, the sky gets dark, thunder rumbles. He sits up and looks around, shaking his head in disgust. He looks down at her and she is slowly fading away out of his dream. Slowly fading...."Nooooo...come back...come baaaaccckk." A nurse shakes him, "Mister, are you all right?" "Huh? Where'd she go?" He asked trying to gain his senses about him. "Where'd who go sir?" she asks. "Never mind," realizing it was only the dream. He goes to the bathroom to wash his face to wake up. He rubs his face dry with the towel and walks over to the window looking out once again. The rain coming down softer, thunder not as loud. It's as though it were ceasing to come to a halt. He sees his reflection once again, as if it were talking back at him, "She's coming back...your love is so great....she felt it with your hand...she's coming back." He blinked his eyes not believing what he just heard his reflection had just said. He walks over to the side of the bed and sits down again, looking at her beautiful glow. He grasps her hand and starts to pray. 'Dear God, my love is so great for her. Please let her live. Let her know we will always be together. Please let her come back to me so we can be together. I will be so ever grateful." With a tear rolling down his cheek, he wipes it off and saying softly, "Amen." He lays there with his head resting on their clasped hands and it seems like hours since he had said that prayer, but it was only a few moments. He felt movement. He jerks his head up and looks to see if it would happen again. Was he staring too hard and hoping too hard? Was he dreaming again? Did she actually move her hand? He stands up with her hand still grasped in his, as he leans into her ear and softly tells her, "Baby, come back to me. I'm here. I'll always be here." Just then, she bats her eyes, trying to focus, and slowly moves her lips to speak, "Where am I?" She says slowly with a dry mouth. The monitors set off to aware the nurses of her awakening. "You're in the hospital sweetie. I promise to never let you go. I won't never leave you again. I'm here and I'm yours." Her memory slowly comes back, "What about your wife?" "While I was trying to be faithful for the marriage sake," the doctors and nurses were doing their jobs of taking counts and measurements from the monitors, as he continued to grasp her hand, "I got home and found her with someone else. I left and got to your house, finding out that you had tried to kill yourself. Why baby?" "I felt I had lost everything when you walked out the door. I felt no sense in going on." She was saying in a sleepy voice. "But baby, I told you I would always be with you. I will always be there." "Well, I thought," she tries to clear her dry throat to continue, "it would never happen. It would be impossible with you being married. So, if I couldn't see you and be with you, I was going to end it, because that is all I wanted, was to be with you." "It's a good thing your neighbor came by when she did. I wouldn't be talking to you right now. To let you know how much I love you. To let you know I'm yours for as long as you want me." "That would be for a long time. I love you hon...." She nods off to go to sleep. The doctor looks at me with a nod of approval and says, "She's going to be all right. Everything looks good." He looks down at her sweet face and tells her, "I love you too sweetie." He looks up to the ceiling, "Thank you God, for everything. I'll never stop believing." THE END. |
