Topic: Running Up The Score | |
---|---|
Ok, before I begin, let me make two statements:
1. I am a Dallas Cowboys fan 2. I DESPISE the New England Patriots That being said: Why is everyone griping and moaning about the fact that New England is "running up the score" on their opponents? "It's not fair" they whine. "It's not the sportsmanlike thing to do" others wail. Folks, it's like this--Pro Football is a adult's game. It's NOT kindergarden T-Ball where "everybody gets to play" or "Everyone's a winner". Just doesn't work that way. Last time I checked, NFL players were getting paid a lot of money. Offenses are paid to score. Defenses are paid to stop others from scoring. It is opponent's JOB to stop the Patriots from scoring--NOT the Pats coaching staff's job. If the coaches want to keep Brady and the offense in the entire game, SO FREAKING WHAT? It's not the Pats' job to "play nice" with others. And besides, last time I checked, "Margin of victory" ans "points scored" were elements used for tie-breaking purposes for playoff spots. So the IS a legit reason to score as much as you can. There simply isn't an argument against what the Pats are doing. And yes, I feel I CAN speak on this--after all, my Cowboys were one of the teams that got "blew out" by the Pats. But, hey, they should have stopped them. |

I'm just waiting for Brady to blow out his knee after they try another 4th down up 38-0. What they did against the Redskins was pretty messed up. The rest of the time didn't really matter but come on 38-0 and your franchise player is still in the game in the 4th quarter? Smart move Belicheck. I just hope that one player gets injured and it sends a message to him.

That'd be what it takes, BaseballFanatic .
I'm sure Belicheck realizes he's playing a dangerous game. One crucial injury and watch out. I just think that instead of whining about it, these other teams would be wiser to come up with ways to beat the Pats. I mean, it's broken down simply: Ethical, no. Legal, yes. They fine and suspend you for being illegal--NOT for being unethical. |

Yea. I don't think it's right to complain. Honestly, besides the Skins i didn't see much else considering running up the score in my book. The Colts almost had them stopped and I think both teams are pretty even. Imagine if the colts had Harrison they may have won. I just think Belicheck is an asshole at this point and wants to score at will (which is fine) just to stick it to the league that he doesn't cheat.

Having grown up worshiping the Redskins, but now despising them because of that little jerk Snyder that owns them, I wish the Pats would have put up 100 on little Danny Boy's team.

They just turned the second half of the Redskins game into the first practice for the game plan against the Colts. This is why you see teams like the Cowboys, Colts, Patriots - and the elite of the NFL keep their starters in during blow out games in the regular season. <<< |

The redskins will never win the superbowl as long as he's the owner. Know's nothing about Football! It proves the point - you can't buy a Superbowl! << |

Having had one of the better owners in sports in Jack Kent Cooke for many years, it just wasn't stomachable what this little jerkoff did to the franchise. I had season tickets, but gave them up after 1 year of him.
I could go on for hours about all the s--- he's done to ruin the franchise and in the process take all the fun out of the game. But getting back to te original topic, running up the score is definitely unsportsmanlike- unless it's done to Little Danny Snyder. |

I understand your frustration with Snyder. I've had over 25 years of it in Boston with Jacobs owning the Bruins. We should have had a dozen Stanley cups by now with the hall-of-famers he's forced the G.M.'s to give away. Boston will never win the cup with Jacobs as owner. Just like the Red Sox couldn't win a world series until Dan Ducette was run out of town. Since then, we've won it twice.
As to running up the score - football is unlike other sports, because you run the risk of serious injury to more than just your star players when you start taking them off the field in droves. Also - you can't take an entire offense off the field and simply put in a second team like you can in, say, basketball. And taking a knee in the 3rd quarter is more of an insult than going for it on 4th down. Defenses are on the field to stop the offense. Period. If they can't do that - replace the defensive players, not the offense. |

Did somehow a discussion of football get turned into a discussion of creeping socialism? It sure sounds like it, adj4.
Come on. Most of us have played some sport at some level in our lives. And we've probably all been on both ends of lopsided scores. Any coach I ever played for would ease up when the game got out of control. That's called good sportsmanship. But sometimes things keep getting worse anyway. It happens. Not every blowout is unsportsmanlike. |

maybe the sportsmanship of not running up the score
has lead to the creeping in of socialism |
