If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant
I disagree. To me this is like saying "if we had no winter, the changing of the autumnal foliage wouldn't be as pretty." Spring is pleasant on its own merits. if we did not sometimes taste of adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome
That seems more of a failure of the human condition that maybe should be worked to overcome. If we didn't taste of adversity, lesser prosperity would become the new adversity, requiring greater amounts of prosperity to overcome. I think most people would prefer to start life a millionaire with the potential to become a billionaire, than to start out in abject, destitute, starving, broke, how am I going to stay alive poverty with the potential to securely "I can keep myself alive and get by." Other than that, it seems what's implied is "life is best if you feel fear and overcome it." But is there a way to never feel fear at all? Just higher orders of hope and pleasure? Which is better, to force people to feel fear, so they can overcome it, to force people to contribute towards no one feeling fear by giving something up? Which is worse, taking spring for granted because there is no winter or just accepting people are going to freeze and starve to death in winter in order to make spring feel more pleasant? |

If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant; if we did not sometimes taste of adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome. This is what we call APPRECIATION which is the key to a happy life. Most of us forget to be grateful of the small and great things that we have in life. Little did we know that through all the sufferings and setbacks in our lives, we gain wisdom that would lead us to achieve greater things in the future.
